We recently connected with Tyson Green and have shared our conversation below.
Tyson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve learnt overtime that Google search is a gift when looking for information. With my screenwriting journey i googled free screenwriting courses and found a great in-depth course, that taught me the foundation of screenplay writing. I then built on that by watching various YouTube video from professional writers and read numerous screenwriting books and also listened to podcasts that gave professional industry insights and top tips on the craft. I used the same process for my journey as an author, but also joined Facebook pages for authors that were open forums for great questions and answers.
I believe in these types of industries the process shouldn’t be rushed, apart from hurrying up to take the step forward to start the process.
As a screenwriter watching movies and TV shows and also studying the scripts while watching them is essential. This gives you a great insight into professional industry level writing, but also how the script translates to screen.
But as an author reading other children’s books with similar themes is beneficial, and understanding what children gravitate to when reading books, also knowing how to write and deliver themes and content that is easily digestible and fun for the readers is essential..
Being that i had no clue of where to start with the process, i had to do lots of research and hit lots of brick walls, but the Facebook forums helped with moving the process forward, as most new authors had already asked the questions i needed the answers to, but there were some technical things involved in the process that i didn’t quite understand which slowed the process, but in the usual Tyson fashion if there’s something i don’t understand i take the time to get to understand it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Writing has been something I’ve enjoyed since I was a child, starting with rhyming poetry and evolving into writing lyrics and spoken word. But I took a long break from my creative ways while serving in the army for 13 years.
After my time of service, I decided to rekindle my creative ways and create my own fashion brand, GSBS Clothing. This new endeavour led me to spend time on film sets while providing my brand for actors’ wardrobes in films. While falling in love with the filmmaking process behind the scenes, I decided to expand my horizons by taking an online screenwriting course, setting the stage for my creative journey in film. Crafting narratives that hit close to home became my passion, merging real experiences into stories that entertain and shed light on real-world issues.
Even with a full-time job as an HGV driver, I made time to write. There’s something magical about blending thoughts and experiences into stories. Using my struggle with mental health, I decided to write and produce my first short film, ‘Trigger-ed’, aiming to spread mental health awareness and encourage viewers to understand mental health better and to seek help if needed. On my mission to spread awareness, I decided to create a children’s book called ‘DOC GREEN AND THE MIND MONSTERS’ drawing from my own battles during childhood and my army days. My book is a self-help adventure book that recounts the tale of Doc Green as she embarks on a journey into the brain to offer assistance to the mind monsters within. The book’s objective is to aid readers in gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and their mental health. I recently published and released my book on Amazon in eBook and paperback formats, and it will soon be released on Barnes & Noble’s website also, so please keep an eye out for details on my social media or website.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Most of my creative work revolves around mental health awareness, as I’ve been to some very dark places in my life but have come out on top after working on my mindset during and after therapy. So, I always incorporate a message that hopefully helps even just one person speak out and get help, because I know there are brighter days on the other side of suffering from mental illnesses.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The best book I’ve read for screenwriting is Syd Fields: The Foundations of Screenwriting, and I regularly listen to The Filmmakers Podcast, which always delivers invaluable tips and advice in every episode, but it’s also entertaining at the same time. If you’re looking to start your journey as a children’s book author, I’d suggest typing into Facebook search Children’s Book author groups, and you’ll find so many that you can draw information from that will lay the stepping stones out on your journey.
