We were lucky to catch up with Tyshera Wilbon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyshera, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
There was a time when I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do in life, but I always knew I wanted to start my own business. Transitioning from an undergraduate degree in criminal justice to earning a master’s in media was a significant but necessary shift—one of the best decisions I could have made. I realized that a career in law enforcement or the legal field wasn’t for me, and stepping into the world of media unlocked a creative side I hadn’t fully explored.
Now, as the CEO and Founder of Tyshera Design Labs, I want to be remembered for my creativity and the impact of my designs. My graphics are more than just visuals; they are pieces of art that I take pride in, each one reflecting my passion and dedication to storytelling through design.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tyshera Wilbon, and I’m from Baltimore, Maryland. I graduated in 2024 with a master’s degree in Emerging Media from Loyola University Maryland. The program provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the digital business world, including web development, UX design, social media content creation, podcasting, blogging, and graphic design. During my time at Loyola, I interned as a graphic design and social media intern for podcasts like Yumlish and GSMC Sports, where I honed my skills in creating visually appealing content. Currently, I serve as a social media specialist for Niro Designs, a jewelry business, and a graphic designer for Zenjoy, a beverage company.
Graphic design wasn’t always a passion of mine. It wasn’t until 2024, while interning at Yumlish and GSMC Sports, that I discovered my natural talent for creating graphics. I found joy in seeing my designs resonate with people, and when they were featured on YouTube videos and social media platforms, it confirmed my passion. From that point, I was determined to continue refining my skills and pursuing this creative path.
I later launched my graphic design business, Tyshera Design Labs Co., where I specialize in custom graphics, business cards, flyers, corporate marketing materials, YouTube Banners, logos, motion graphics (such as reels), and much more. My mission is to bring my clients’ visions to life through high-quality designs. What sets me apart from other graphic designers is my diverse creativity and the range of services I offer, from corporate flyers and logos to event promotions and sports marketing. I pride myself on delivering top-notch work with quick turnaround times, usually within 24-72 hours.
I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve created so far and the impact it has had on my clients. Every piece of work is meaningful to me, and I look forward to what the future holds. My goal is to expand my business and reach a wider audience, continuing to help clients turn their ideas into visual realities.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I developed a strong interest in entrepreneurship but was uncertain about where to begin. During my junior year at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the outbreak led to the abrupt conclusion of the semester, leaving me at home with ample free time. Seeking a productive outlet, I turned to reading to understand how successful individuals achieved their wealth.
One book that profoundly influenced my perspective is Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. The title initially piqued my interest, and I found Kleon’s insights both engaging and enlightening. A key takeaway from the book is the idea that true innovation often involves reimagining and adapting existing concepts to fit contemporary contexts. This aligns with my approach as a graphic designer: I draw inspiration from the work of others, incorporating elements that resonate with me and transforming them into something uniquely my own.
Kleon’s emphasis on the value of side projects and hobbies also resonated with me. He suggests that engaging in activities outside of one’s primary work can foster creativity and provide new perspectives. This advice has encouraged me to explore various creative outlets, enriching my skills and broadening my entrepreneurial outlook.
Overall, Steal Like an Artist has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of creativity and entrepreneurship, reinforcing the notion that innovation is often a process of transformation and adaptation.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a new business owner, I quickly realized that building a strong clientele requires time, effort, and consistency. Early on, I struggled with the feeling that my content wasn’t getting enough attention or engagement. One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that “nobody’s paying attention.” Over time, I came to understand that there are always people noticing my work, even if I don’t see immediate feedback. My family and friends continuously support me, sharing my graphics and promoting my name to others. I’ve also received messages from strangers who appreciate my designs, along with recognition from larger collaborators on Instagram. This shift in perspective taught me to stay true to myself, remain consistent, and trust that the right opportunities and clientele will come in due time.
