We caught up with the brilliant and insightful TyShawn Douglas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi TyShawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Black Arizona began as a simple Facebook group but quickly evolved into something much greater—a powerful LLC dedicated to becoming the central hub for Black-owned businesses, communities, and families across Arizona. From the start, the mission was clear: to create a space where Black excellence could thrive, connections could flourish, and resources could be shared to empower our people.
Turning this vision into reality required more than just an idea—it demanded action, unity, and relentless dedication. It meant bringing together community leaders, business owners, and like-minded individuals who believed in the same dream. It wasn’t always easy. One of the biggest challenges has been finding those who not only see the vision but are willing to join us in building it. Yet, we refuse to let that hold us back.
We’ve faced these challenges head-on by driving awareness and actively participating in initiatives that truly matter—financial literacy, health and wellness, land development, real estate, and education. These are the pillars our community needs to not only survive but thrive. By championing these efforts and staying rooted in service, we’ve shown the community exactly who we are and what we stand for.
Our message to those who aspire to be leaders or advocates for Black communities, families, and businesses—whether here in Arizona or anywhere in the world—is simple: don’t overthink it. Take action. The key to success is in the doing, in taking that first step and staying committed to the work, no matter how difficult the path may seem.
Black Arizona isn’t just a business. It’s a movement—a testament to what’s possible when we come together with purpose and determination to uplift and empower our own.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Love, Loyalty, Respect & Trust.
These key qualities have always open doors for me that have not been open to most young Black men. Yet I’ve faced challenges to be able to open the doors, but overlap keeping these qualities and believing in them wholeheartedly has been my go to.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Unfortunately I’m Mr. Do it all!!
I have many passions and many businesses and I do them all and find a way to make time for them all and understand the benefits of having and mastering them all. So there is never a dull moment or a regretful moment because I’m always doing something enjoying the moments.
