Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyrus Solomon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tyrus, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am happy as an artist. It’s literally a dream come true to be doing what I love professionally and also introspectively. It feels like a huge ongoing project. I’m also pretty aware of what a regular 9-5 would be like being that I’m an artist. I like to explore, I like to learn new things so it’s never an issue picking up a 9-5. As an artist timing is very important. I think if you have to suffice for a regular job temporarily in order to take care of expenses then do so. Never allow your doubts to control you or allow your pride to keep you confined. Consider options! That’s my insight.
Tyrus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a fine artist, designer and muralist. I produce designs based on my art pieces and I enjoy mixing styles while offering a wide variety of options in my market. I love selling original artwork as well as replica prints, clothing and paraphernalia. What sets me apart from others is my range. I cover all facets of art while maintaining a consistent presence.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first moved to Memphis, TN I came with 2 bags and $85 to my name. I didn’t know anything about this new environment. I was only partially familiar with the city. And I was practically homeless. I stayed in hotels for almost half a year. I traveled with my art around the city just finding my way on my own. The third hotel I found myself in thankfully hired me to work there. I saved up, got an apartment and continued my journey as the next big visual artist of the South. It wasn’t easy. I felt alone but by the grace of God and my resilience I’m now amongst some of the greatest people I could have ever met.
