We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyrone Stewart . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyrone below.
Hi Tyrone , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Recently I had the pleasure of being casted in a short film titled “Huey” written and directed by Ken Gregory. It’s a short film that captures the last days of civil rights activist and Black Panther co founder Huey P. Newton. While preparing for the role I learned a lot of history about the movement of civil rights in the west coast.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From the age of 14, I’ve worked in many different career fields with little to no experience. Ranging from selling fine jewelry to healthcare and even selling high end retail on 5th ave in Manhattan. After years of pretending to be experienced in fields I had no experience in and successfully getting hired to work for company’s I deemed helpful to building my skills in the workforce. I was ultimately unfulfilled which caused me to fall into a deep depression. It was then that I had to confront something inside of me, I was suffocating for a long time not knowing my purpose. In a venting conversation with my grandmother, I expressed to her how unfulfilled I felt working for the companies that was somewhat monetarily beneficial, but wasn’t satisfying me spiritually. She responded “Well, what do you tell me you always do when you go into these jobs ?” I replied “I don’t know I tell you a lot of stuff” her response was “You always tell me you act to get the job…. why don’t you start acting for yourself?.” All of a sudden a light went off in my head. Although I had no experience in theater or training in any form, she was absolutely correct. I moved from New York to Los Angeles and started attending scene study. I will never forget my first time having to perform a monologue in class. It was only after being critiqued I started to fall in love with myself and this new found passion I never fed started to grow.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I feel the most rewarding aspect of being an actor is learning how to be vulnerable. It’s not the easiest thing to be, but it can be extremely powerful.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Now that I’m an adult I understand that some things can be completely out of your control. I attended public schools that didn’t allow me to dream. I think there would be more artists and creatives if there are more spaces and opportunities for some who may not be as fortunate to monetarily afford access.
