We recently connected with Tyrone Meijer and have shared our conversation below.
Tyrone, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have always been drawing ever since I was a kid and I did eventually went to collage for Graphic Design and 3D, This led to a long and successful career working in the design and 3D world at a large global sports brand. But this career drove me towards more of the management, tech and operational side of the creative work.
In 2015 I got the itch to explore the more traditional way of working. I had worked with paints and pencils a bit in collage but the focus was more on digital. So I enrolled into a three day watercolor paint workshop where I learned a lot and became more interested. This led me to learning and experimenting with a lot of different paints, tools and paper.
In hindsight I would have loved to have started painting earlier on but I believe things happen for a reason and maybe I was not ready back then.
In my opinion, essential skills that you need to have to pursue a career in the visual medium industry. Is to have a good eye for composition. This applies for both digital and traditional art. If you are able to draw in the viewer with an exciting composition that shows mood, movement and action that is already half the work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have over 20 years of experience working in the design and 3D industry. The first years of my career I worked as a 3D modeler and graphic designer, but after a couple of years I moved to the management side. Where I managed the day to day of teams of creatives. The last years I moved into the direction of Process Innovation focusing more on the big picture 3D digital workflows and the technical side of the creative work.
As a lifelong comic book enthusiast, I published my first creator owned comic book “The Hole” in 2020. Followed by two more issues “Sins Of The Father” in 2022 and “No Man’s Land” in 2023. All part of my horror anthology series Obscure.
In 2024 I had my first publicized work with Inservice Comics from Canada for a short story in “The Setlist – volume 2”.
I have been attending comic cons in Oregon and Washington area since 2022, where I sell my comic books, original artwork, prints and other merchandise.
Sitting in your room and painting and drawing for hours can get pretty lonely. Being able to go out and meet likeminded people is great! Meeting other artists and vendors that do this because of the love for the work is inspiring. Seeing satisfied and returning customers for the work that you created is the best thing in the world.
I consider myself a student always, so I try to get better with every piece. I’ve already had some amazing opportunities but I hope I will get even more and bigger opportunities as I continue to grow as an artist.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Artists are societies storytellers and have always played a pivotal role in humanity’s history. From our cave paintings to CGI in some summer blockbuster movie. I think it’s an artist role to keep pushing the boundaries of imagination because what can be fiction today can be reality tomorrow. But we first have to conceptualize the idea first before it can become reality. For example, Jules Verne wrote about going to the moon a hundred years before we eventually went to the moon in real life.
Artificial Intelligence can create amazing things nowadays but I believe there will always be a need for human imagination and ingenuity. So we need to support artist to continue to create and make a living with what they are doing. Artificial Intelligence will fill this need for more and more content but in my opinion quality suffers and we lower the quality baseline with this overkill of mediocre work.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
What I really like that today you can find almost everything you want to learn more about online. If you want to learn any 2D or 3D software you can watch full tutorials. Or you can watch a workshop from your favorite artist or writer explaining their complete process.
My favorite online place is https://www.domestika.org, they have a wide range of workshops and for an affordable price.
