We recently connected with Tyris Dickerson and have shared our conversation below.
Tyris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I will have to give the props to my mother Marsha Dickerson. She instilled a strength in me like no other. Just seeing her show up every day as a parent is inspiring enough. Knowing that she may have been struggling physically, emotionally, financially and still had the will power to consistently be there as a loving mother pretty much gave me everything i needed to see. In this life, you have a choice. You have to choose to work hard, or choose to have that discipline and choose to have the loving and powerful energy that ignites the room. She was my hero and it has gave me so many characteristics that propelled me to where i am now.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Cincinnati Ohio and raised in Akron Ohio. As a kid, I always grew up around music. I was blessed to say that I was involved in various art styles. From orchestras to the R&Bs to rap, I was always surrounded by me. I ended up going to a performing arts school called Miller South during my 4th through 8th-grade years where I was a part of the vocal choir. This truly helped me understand music in a different light. The structure, the cadence, the voice control, range, and formatting. although I perform the rap style as an artist, I know that this is what excels me in my creative writing style and the way my audio comes out. In today’s day and age, content is very important and I feel that context is even more important. I believe that this is what sets me apart. Authenticity is something that I’ve used as a focus. when you are authentic it adds value and you can gain a more organic audience that becomes able to grow with you. I want to be as relatable as possible and I want the people to not only hear but as well feel what I am talking about. This is very important to me as an artist. It also is what I’m most proud of, not being a follower and having the will to go out and be myself. You may have the chance to hear me on a familiar style of beat but I guarantee that what I talk about will be heard on a different level. You get the real me, there is no fabrication involved and you get to be apart of the story.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story of my resilience would just have to be from my past three years of life. I was completely devastated when my mother passed away on August 17th 2021. It took me back. I was going through a plethora of emotions and became severely depressed. During this time there was just a lot of soul-searching and re-learning about who I truly was. Losing a parent is just an unimaginable pain that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I fell out of love with the things that made me happy because of her absence, that being things like football and even school. I didn’t know what I wanted to do anymore, or what life had for me and it became a struggle some days even walking out the house trying not to break down into tears. Through the church, prayer, counseling, the gym, and music I have been able to revamp myself just in an entirely different way. I knew then that I was truly resilient and I grasped the understanding that if I can get through this, I can get through anything in life whatever was thrown at me! I want to be an example of what it means to keep going and to be strong in this world of chaos, and i plan to be an inspiration to many who may be in the same situation in life. You can do it, but there has to be a choice from within to become it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting the messages that I made someone’s day better or even life better with my music is just the best feeling. You put a lot of effort into what you put out as an artist and with being a growing artist, you go through the negative thoughts that your music isn’t doing what you intend it to do. So just hearing that from someone has to be the most amazing feeling ever in life. I want to touch everyone who listens to me and i want them to feel good after they have heard my work.
