We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyrin Brewster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyrin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
There’s a lot of different ways I could answer this question. But of course I’m happy as an artist/creative it’d be very tough to see the dream if I weren’t. With that being said though they’re times when the dream gets blurred and in those moments I do sometimes wonder if I should’ve gone the old school route. Finish college and then find me a stable 9-5 and call it a day. But i was always a creative kid, the arts were something that could always grasp my full attention and once I started making my own art I felt like I should’ve started earlier but very happy I started even at all.

Tyrin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Music has always been something i’ve loved for as long as i can remember. It started off with me always wanting to learn every lyric to all the music i was listening to. I loved the feeling of finding a song that you can relate to and it becoming your favorite record instantly. As a kid i always wished that i could write my own songs but i never really knew where to begin. So it wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that i started to make my music of my own. A couple of my friends and I started to get together to write and record music at my house but i didn’t really have any real equipment back then so we recorded everything in my bathroom and the microphone we used was a pair of the wired apple headphones. Obviously we weren’t making the best quality music but we knew we had to start somewhere. What started off as something I picked up just for fun with my friends is now something i cant see myself not doing at all. Its not always easy being an artist/creative sometimes it can be quite frustrating but the sense of accomplishment i feel after getting a demo or two done in a day or even over the course of the week is unmatched. So I think the main thing i’m most proud of myself for is the fact that Im still going. Sometimes dreams can be hard to follow and keep up with. I could’ve thrown in the towel years ago and just gone down the 9-5 lifestyle road because that’d most likely be easier but when you feel this much passion for something its way too difficult to just let it go even in the times of major frustration.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
A couple things come to mind but i think the first would be having someone who’s a friend or fan of the music i make tell me how much they could relate or how much they needed to hear someone say what they’re feeling on the inside out loud. One of the biggest reasons why i started on this artist path is because while I had plenty of music I could relate to there was also a big amount of feelings that i didn’t know how to express or let out in any way shape or form. so once i started writing it felt like a weight was slowly being lifted off of me and when i put out this music into the world little can beat people telling you how relatable your writing is.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I mean who wouldn’t want the fame and fortune aspect of the artist dream. Its definitely a goal but not the biggest priority. I think my goal right now is to just keep having fun with it. I love the music i make and i absolutely love playing live with my band hopefully one day ill be able to do music full time.
