We were lucky to catch up with Tyric Bacon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyric , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
That would have be the project I’m currently working on. It’s my first short film titled “A Tale of Blood and Magic.” I chose this as my most meaningful project because of how much its changed me as a person. While working on this project, I’ve had to face my flaws and recognize how I sometimes get in my own way. I’ve had to work through feelings of self-doubt. Working on this project has taught me to be realistic and how to put actual steps in place that will lead me to my goals. My creativity has been challenged every step of the way and as a result, I’ve needed to re-learn and restructure what truly matters when crafting a narrative film. I’ve found strength within myself that I did not know was there before. Above all else, this project has taught me what it means to truly believe in myself. It just makes me wonder, if this project has been a catalyst for so much change within me before its even been completed, what change is in store once it makes it out into the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Sure thing! My name is Tyric Bacon. I’ve always loved to create, even as a little boy. This creativity first manifested as it does in all kids; drawing, painting, etc. Everything changed though when I received my first camera at twelve years old. It was an old VHS camcorder and I would spend most of my time outside making mini-movies with my younger siblings. I quickly realized that I experienced the most joy in creating when filmmaking was the medium. As I grew older, my passion for filmmaking grew as well. I was eager to learn everything that went into it; pre-production, editing, cinematography, etc. I was constantly soaking up as much material as I could. My junior and senior years of high school were especially formative in regard to my filmmaking journey. I enrolled in my school’s film program where students were taught all aspects of filmmaking. This involved everything from storyboarding, filming, editing, and much more. We were also taught the business aspect as well, like how to properly pitch an idea or story. It’s in this class that I gained knowledge, structure, and perseverance; all necessary when bringing creative stories to life. I am forever grateful for that experience. It’s one of the factors that have helped me get to the place where I am today. That and consistency. I think it’s important for everyone to know that any dream or passion you have will not work if you are not consistent and disciplined with the actions you take.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect as a creative is being able to inspire people and trigger something within them. Film and the arts as a whole are powerful mediums that can create change within a collective. There’s something very profound about that and its what made me fall in love with film in the first place. While money, accolades, and recognition are rewarding prospects of being a creative, I believe I will feel most fulfilled when my creative projects help ignite someone’s passion or challenge others to think differently.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began building my social media presence during the height of the pandemic and quarantine. In hindsight, I believe this worked greatly in my favor because with everyone stuck in the house, there wasn’t much to do besides engage with social media. Once I saw my following begin to grow, I focused heavily on consistency. Consistency is what will set you apart in this ever expanding online world. Going viral and making trends is one thing but it’s another thing to maintain and grow an actual audience. To those out there that are looking to build your online presence, figure out what it is you want to create and once you do, stay consistent with it. Also know that your path is uniquely your own. Do not compare others’ success and path to yours. Don’t be afraid to adapt and to do things differently if they aren’t working. Above all else, know why you’re doing this in the first place. If it’s just for likes, views, and engagement, you’ll will burn yourself out very quickly and social media will begin to feel like a chore. Instead, you should ask yourself why it is you want to build a following. Are you trying to start a business? Do you feel you have your own unique POV that can enrich the world? Answering this question will build a strong foundation for yourself and help ensure your journey has longevity. Be sure to have fun along the way and to switch things up once in awhile. Switching things up will surprise the people that follow you and keep them coming back for more.
