We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyrese Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrese, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
A photographer may find themselves competing with hobbyists or even people using affordable equipment (smartphones, entry-level cameras) and post-processing software. This has made it harder for many professionals to maintain pricing power, especially when consumers may not see the difference in quality between a high-end camera shot and a photo from a smartphone. It’s very hard making your business profitable without the proper training from a business perspective there is alot that goes behind being a entrepreneur and doing business alone and trying to gain recognition.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into videography and photography began at the age of 13. My fascination with cameras and technology grew over time, and I vividly remember filming home videos on a camcorder. I am 23 years old residing in Brooklyn , New York, my early childhood I grew up in Belize in a small town called Dangriga. I was fortunate to have great friends who shared similar interests, making it easier for me to be creative and true to myself. Being creative allows me to express myself in ways I never thought i could. I started my business Through My Lens in May of 2019 from humble beginnings starting with light to nothing but over time grew and steadily growing, I am a full time electrician but my creative urges can’t resist creating beautiful images. Very proud of how far I came with this dream working with international artists and photographing big events. My journey is unique and holds true value and it shows in my work.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I almost gave up multiple times but this has been a childhood dream of mine and i would not be able to live with myself knowing if i meep trying i will capture the opportunity and i kept the discipline to stir me in the right path. I started from borrowing camera to owning my own professional camera and other high value equipments.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Definitely word of mouth has gotten me most of my job, or social media marketing. I’ve been working hard in order to stay connected to my followers and clients. I keep a friendly/ professional relationship with my clients so that things run smoothly.
