Tyrell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In fifth grade, I vividly recall the awe-inspiring moment when I watched Michael Jackson’s electrifying performance on HBO’s “Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour.” Everything about the concert was simply astounding – from Michael’s magnetic presence to the seamless choreography and the overall creativity of the show. It was a revelation for me, igniting a deep-seated desire to create in some form or another. Though I wasn’t entirely sure where to start, the prospect was undeniably thrilling.
As I delved into the world of art, I found myself captivated by the intricacies of movies and music videos, dissecting them to uncover what made them so creatively captivating. This newfound passion propelled me forward, setting me on a path toward artistic expression. However, as I transitioned into high school, my focus shifted to sports, leaving little time for creative pursuits.
Fortunately, fate intervened in the form of Stockton Apollo Nights, a local talent showcase in my city. Despite my initial apprehension, I was approached by a dance crew in search of new members. While the idea of performing on stage was daunting, I was hesitant to join solely due to my lack of experience in choreographed dance. It was during this time that I confided in my mother, who reassured me of my creative abilities and encouraged me to forge my own path.
Her unwavering belief in my potential empowered me to embrace my creativity fully. Instead of joining an existing crew, she urged me to create one of my own – one that reflected my unique style and artistic vision. And so, at the age of fifteen, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration, fueled by the unwavering support of my mother and the boundless possibilities of creativity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Embarking on my journey from Stockton, California, to the bustling streets of Los Angeles was a leap of faith—an audacious step toward realizing my dream of a career in dance. Leaving behind the tumultuous drama of my past, including the responsibilities of teenage fatherhood, I was determined to carve out a new path filled with opportunity and fulfillment.
However, my transition to the entertainment capital wasn’t without its challenges. Financial hardships loomed large during those initial six months, casting a shadow of doubt on my aspirations. In the labyrinth of the entertainment industry, I found myself a novice, grappling with the intricacies of this competitive world. Thankfully, the support of friends who had tread this path before me provided solace and a temporary refuge as I navigated the unfamiliar terrain.
Aware that talent alone wouldn’t suffice in this cutthroat arena, I embarked on a rigorous regimen of self-improvement. From the hallowed halls of Debbie Reynolds to the dynamic ambiance of The Edge and Millennium Dance Complex, I immersed myself in a plethora of classes, leaving no stone unturned in my quest for mastery. Swallowing my pride, I delved into areas where I was less proficient, embracing discipline as my guiding light.
The first glimmer of hope emerged after months of relentless auditions and meager sustenance, primarily consisting of cup O’noodles. Finally, the breakthrough arrived—a job offer that would alter the trajectory of my career. The sheer ecstasy that washed over me was indescribable, a moment etched forever in my memory.
With that pivotal breakthrough, the floodgates opened, ushering in a flurry of opportunities. From dancing in iconic films and music videos to touring alongside industry titans, my ascent in the entertainment world seemed boundless. Notably, my involvement in prestigious television productions such as “The Voice,” “America’s Got Talent,” and “Legendary” afforded me the chance to showcase my artistry on a grand stage.
Reflecting on my journey, I stand proud of the resilience that carried me through the darkest of times. Each obstacle surmounted, each setback overcome, has fortified my resolve and deepened my appreciation for the art of dance. As I continue to choreograph and produce captivating performances, my heart swells with gratitude for the unwavering support of those who believed in me.
In the tapestry of my life, every triumph, every stumble, is woven into a narrative of relentless pursuit and unyielding passion. With each step forward, I honor the journey that has brought me to this point—a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering self-belief.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Most rewarding aspect of being a creative is doing what you love. Being innovative and sharing with the world to make be happy, interested and fulfilled.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Back on January 4th, 2014, my birthday, I had to make a major shift in my career due to an injury. I was at the peak of my dance and choreography career, but it all came to a halt when I tore my bicep and pectoral muscle while working out. I couldn’t move my right arm anymore. I had to get pins in my shoulder and go to therapy to learn how to use my arm again. I was devastated and depressed, especially since I also had a baby girl on the way. I was going to have a daughter in April that year. Long story short, I ended up in rehabilitation for over six months. My beautiful baby girl was born, and I was a proud father, but I had to learn another skill to bring in income. So I went to bartending school and got a bartending job. It was a very lucrative job, and I ended up doing that for two years until I was able to return to the entertainment industry. When I came back, I danced and choreographed again but also got a major opportunity to create. I ended up as a performance creative producer on NBC’s The Voice. I’m still on the show today.
