We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyrell Buckner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyrell below.
Tyrell , appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
There were three times in my life where I failed and came back stronger. The first time was my sophomore year in high school where I wanted to run track but I got cut from the team. I came back my junior year to try again, I made the team and became a conference champion. After I graduated high school, I wanted to join the Army but I couldn’t get in because I was underweight. I tried again, made weight, and served for 5 years.
During my 4th year in the Army, I wanted to change careers and become and actor. I applied for college but I didn’t get get because I wasn’t good enough. I worked on my craft, applied to a different college, and graduated top of my class.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into acting because while I was in the Army, I made comedy skits and sketches to post on social media. One day, someone who followed me told me that they appreciated me for who I am just by making them laugh. They was having a bad day and they went on my page and watched all my videos and it made them fell better. When they told me that, I felt good and happy that I have a gift to make them laugh and smile and that made me want to help more people like that so I decided to become an actor. During this journey, I also decided to become a standup comedian. After a show I did, one lady told me that I was charming on stage and I brightened up the room. Making people laugh and smile me feel proud of who I am.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creator is the relationships I build with other creators/ artists. I have become good friends with people who I met through various projects that I’ve done. It’s a good feeling when you know that there is someone in the world in the same industry as you who is rooting for you instead of going against you.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time in my career where I had to pivot is when I graduated from acting school. After I graduated from Theatre of Arts Hollywood, I didn’t get the opportunities I wanted right away with acting. Because I had a background in making comedy videos and writing my own ideas, I decided that I should also get a degree in writing. So I decided to start my writing career at UCLA to become a screenwriter.
