We were lucky to catch up with Tyrah Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyrah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name is Lunar Remedy. I wish I could say I came up with that name right away but it definitely was a journey to create a business name that felt right to me. In the beginning I wanted my business name to be very obvious like “Tyrah’s apothecary” or “Soothing products by Tyrah” but nothing felt like the right fit. I knew I had to make a creative pivot so I began to think about my own self care routine. I like to start my routine at night, being a busy mother thats usually when I can have uninterrupted me time. I also follow the moon cycle in regards to my journaling, reflections and manifestations and lastly (like a true introvert) I need my selfceare routine to help restore my energy from the day. It was thinking of my own self care routine that helped me discover the name “Lunar Remedy”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In March of 2020 all of our lives changed. For me I lost my job and health benefits, I was unable to continue my therapy sessions and I was tasked with helping my kids navigate learning from home. During this extremely stressful time I remembered the last advice I received from my therapist. She stated, this is a trying time, but it is also an opportunity to get to know yourself and find what inspires you. And thats exactly what I did. I discovered my love of gardening and began developing my own self care routine and incorporating my homegrown herbs. And it was during those moments, while recharging under the stillness of the night time sky after a taxing day that the idea of Lunar Remedy came to be. We officially launched November 2020.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I personally manufacture all of the products we offer right in my home studio in Oakland, Ca. I first started making very simple products for myself and friends such as bath salts and body oils. This creative outlet was such a stress reliever and so I began experimenting with more intricate recipes. This process was a lot of fun but filled with fails! When I decided I wanted to learn how to make products to sell I invested in a 6week formulating course which gave me the skills to formulate my very own recipes. This course was specifically created to help people create products that can me sold commercially and will last on store shelves. This was a pricey investment but it definitely paid off in the end, because of this great foundation I was able to offer my products wholesale right away and soon after launching my brand I was in a few local shops in my area. In order to perfect my craft as well as keep up with updated laws, trends and ingredients I still enroll in formulating & manufacturing courses.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Since I have a business that is strongly based on smell and feel I found that in-person markets and craft fairs helped me grow my customer base the fastest since they are able to test the products they are interested in. I also noticed that my most loyal customers have discovered me at in-person events. Not only can they test my products at the markets but I am also able to chat with them, answer any questions and most of all share my story. I started with very small local events, some were even free to participate in and now I participate in larger craft fairs and trade shows. I have even gotten a few wholesale clients from the in person events.
