We recently connected with Tyra .+ Tiara and have shared our conversation below.
Tyra .+ Tiara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
At the beginning of each year, the first quarter of every year, we always strive to challenge ourselves with a creative project that we have never done before. Something that scares us, but will help us grow as artists, performers, and business women. We started working on our first officially single in January of 2018, ‘Moonlight’ on all major music platforms. That was a big step from creating music on our laptop to selling it to the world, and since then, it has been one of our highest selling streamed songs. In January of 2019, we scheduled a three day music session with amazing musicians, engineers, and producers that have worked with the Grammy nominated artist Leon Bridges, to work on our second single ‘Nevermind’. This was our first time collaborating with other experienced musicians in a professional studio, for twelve hours a day, focused on one goal; Creating magic!. This definitely pushed our creativity and our work ethic, and we showed ourselves that putting your all into your dreams will make them a reality. Continuing with the theme, in January 2020, we were invited to perform at our first music festival in Dallas. Although we had performed millions of times before, this was the first time we got to be apart of a show were the acts were from all over the country, and we needed to prove to ourselves that we could put on a great show for people who have never seen us live. Thankfully, we did just that! In January of 2021, we were planning to release our debut album, ‘Hollow Cherries’ later that year. However, we knew that we needed to do something we have never done before to make that album a success-a music video. We were nervous, scared, and did not know how to start. However, we found the right director, created our vision on paper, invested in our dream, and produced our first music video for ‘Motorcycle’. We could go on for days how that music video changed our lives, but that will have to be for another interview :). So far we have taken you through all of the milestones at the top of every year. In 2022, the most recent project that we tackled, was by far the most challenging but the most rewarding. It was time to go on tour. We were anxious, but we had a plan. The first thing we had to do was find venues and shows to perform at. We reached out to many promoters, event planners, and business owners. We negotiated for months and got booked for the shows! There were several No’s along the way and through that, we realized you can never quit. You must keep persevering when things do not appear to be going your way. Next, we needed a band. Yes, we could use a backing track to perform on tour, but we wanted to bring another element to the tour. We wanted live instruments and great musicians that got our vision, and we found just that. From there we rehearsed a month, non-stop, to prepare for the tour. Some days went late into the night and there were days, where we were tired and sick, but we knew what we wanted. We wanted to put on great show every night of the tour and that came with sacrifice. We took our time in crafting the best set list for each show, and picking the perfect stage outfit. The stage lights had to be right, audio equipment had to clear, and we had to make sure the ambiance was set correctly for the show to run smoothly. We absolutely enjoyed crafting this tour from the ground up, and look to go back on tour this summer. We could not have done it without our band members and the support from our supporters who truly care about our craft. We will continue to challenge ourselves and push our boundaries no matter how nervous or frightened we may get. We know the reward is worth it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From Dallas, Texas, we are twin duo and recording artists Tyra + Tiara. We garner our sound through influences from classic soul, alternative r&b, and inspiration from a mix of rock and romantic storytelling. Writing from a place of authenticity and relatability is what drives our creativity in hopes to reach the hearts of every listener. With our eclectic sound, we strive for our music to transcend any genre and location, serenading the hearts of festival goers, music enthusiasts, and even international audiences. As little girls, we remember the feeling of first picking up the mic at the age of six years old, and to this day, never putting it down, continuing their passion of performance and storytelling through our music.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Tiara- Authenticity is definitely the key that is driving this creative journey of mine. I’d say that as time goes on, I inevitably evolve as a person, and it’s important to stay in tune with who I am. I believe self discovery and authenticity are intertwined. How can I be authentic in my work and artistry if I don’t know myself ? So throughout this music journey, I have been experimenting with new sounds, writing about topics I wouldn’t normally discuss, and really digging deep into what I want to put out into the world. I’m staying authentic to who I am. My music is how I express myself and when I showcase this art to the masses, I really want people to feel us. I want people to get a sense of our spirit and connect with us on a level that cannot be expressed with a mere conversation or think piece. So being ourselves is truly the baseline and drive that helps us create original music.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think as artists/creatives we forget what a blessing it is to be gifted with such a talent to express ourselves in the various ways we do. Creating art is such an outlet and honestly a form of therapy in many ways. Tyra and I always talk about how when we are creating music we feel the closest to God. I know many artists or musicians can relate to this. There have been times I’ve cried randomly while making a song or even times I’ve felt an overwhelming sense of bliss while listening to my pianist and guitarist hit chords together. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is experiencing those moments of pure love while creating this newly formed piece of art that no one has ever seen or heard before. I’d say that’s pretty magical if you ask me.
