We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyra Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The biggest risk that I took other than deciding to go back to school in my thirties; was buying my salon. I knew that I wanted to own my own salon but I just wasn’t sure how it was going to happen. One day while I was working- the owner of the salon approached me and asked was I interested in buying the business. I remember asking if she was serious. Once she convinced me that she was; all the doubts and fears tried to creep in making me doubt that I could really do it and be successful. I spoke with my best friend and she encouraged me to go for it. So after some much needed prayers I went for it. That’s was over 10years ago and I haven’t looked back. There has been some days that I questioned if I made the right decision and then a client or one of the stylists will say something that reminds me of why I decided to do it. It was a risk but it has definitely paid off.

Tyra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the owner of Trends Style Studio a full service salon in Smyrna, TN. I am a color specialist but our salon offers all hair services and nails.
Hair is a 2nd career for me. I got my license after my corporate job got downsized.
What sets me and my salon team apart from others is our amazing customer service in addition to our talent as stylists and nail technicians.
If you come to see me TyraStylist or any of the others at Trends Style Studio we strive to give you amazing service at an affordable price.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has been the best source of new clients. A happy satisfied client is definitely best way to expand and keep your business growing

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During the height of the Covid pandemic, the hair industry was impacted hard. We had to shut down business for over 3 months. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to reopen and if I did I wasn’t sure if it was going to be successful. But once I was advised that we could open back up; my team and I rallied together and soon it was business as usual. I could have given up and allowed the fear to keep my salon closed but because I knew that I had people depending on me to provide them with a place to work; I overcame my fear and doubt and I’m so glad that I did.
