Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyra Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tyra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
My business was named Abracollabra by TyrxSkinLab to capture the essence of what I do. I create skincare products that work in collaboration to help rid the skin of hyperpigmentation, inflammation, and irritation. Besides creating products, I also have a blog where I post information about the skin biweekly and the name of my blog is TyrxSkinLab.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In middle school, I learned about the natural hair community. One of the important aspects of taking care of your hair is choosing products that have ingredients that your hair likes. My interest in personal care products grew and I started making my own deodorant in high school. I enjoyed chemistry, so I decided to major in it in college so that I could formulate skincare products one day. Today, I make deodorant, body butters, whipped soap, and am working on a skincare line for hyperpigmentation. Most companies rely on 1 to 2 products that help with hyperpigmentation, my line would include everything needed like sunscreen, a serum, and a gentle exfoliating cleanser. I am most proud of my progress I’ve made teaching myself how to formulate and creating an informational blog. I want future clients to know that gentle cleansing helps keep the skin barrier in tact and sunscreen is needed even in the winter. My brand focuses on providing clarity in the skincare world and using science to pave the way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In spring of 2023, I decided to take a break from school. While on that break I focused on developing my skills as a formulator and to learn more about business. I had the challenge of trying to learn something on my own and I was able to find lots of different resources to enhance my skillset. I was able to make cleansers, moisturizers, serums, and more. One of the greatest lessons I learned was that formulation by hand can cause a lot of variation in the product you create. To minimize variation, it’s important to make sure you repeat the experiment in the same way every time. I spent hours trying to create exact steps, check and balance the pH, and get the exact texture I like. I am still in the process of learning and I’ve adopted a growth mindset through this process. I’m sure that this mindset will help me reach success in my future business goals.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn a thought pattern I had. I used to think that if something was hard or challenging, that it was impossible for me to do successfully. I realized that my focus was on the challenge and not on myself. I discovered that I had an external locus of control and this was my hinderance to reaching success. It was also a strain to have this outlook on life. I have since shifted to an internal locus of control and lately, I’ve been monitoring what I have been doing and changing myself so that I could eventually become successful. Adopting this mindset has greatly improved my stress response. I now believe that success is a step by step process and it happens when you choose to align with it continuously.
