We recently connected with Tynee Sims and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tynee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
The thing my Mom did right was introduce me to God, how to exercise my faith in God, and the power of prayer. Growing up, my Mom would pray all the time, She would pray anywhere and everywhere, i.e. in the bathtub, walking down street, at church, on the way to work, or school, you name it, my Mama was going to pray. She would also pray about everything and for everybody, including her enemies. She literally would pray without ceasing. She understood the importance of talking to God and trusting God in good times and in bad times. Her faith was unmatched. If she spoke it to God, she believed wholeheartedly that it would come to pass, and it always did. Although my mother is deceased, her prayers for me from a child to an adult have manifested in my life. She always said that faith without works is dead, so not only did she pray and believe, she worked towards what she was praying for, and wherever she fell short, God always filled in the gaps with people and/or resources. Being raised in that type of environment has impacted me a great deal. There is nothing that I believe I can’t do. I always take chances and go after my goals and my dreams, because it is my faith that propels me to know and believe that all things will work together for my good, or the good of others. I’m so thankful, that my mother introduced to me God, prayer, and faith. It is what sustains me and keeps me moving forward in all of my endeavors. It was faith that motivated me to start my podcast. I believe God wants to use my voice and my unique viewpoint to help others, encourage others, educate others, entertain others and make a difference in the lives of others. I’m literally the personification of the song, “Living on a prayer” because I’m doing just that!

Tynee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Allow me to introduce myself to some and reintroduce myself to others. I am Tynee Sims, Creator and Producer of the Tynee Talks Podcast. The Podcast that educates and entertains, where you come to laugh and learn. I got into podcasting approximately 6 years ago. I started off as a blogger, and although I found success in writing, I realized that people were getting away from traditional reading and were looking to listen rather than read what they wanted to know, Through research, I learned that people’s attention spans were dwindling, and if someone could talk about information rather than put it in an article, people preferred the audio. I use my platform to discuss things to help people live better and laugh. I discuss topics related to health, relationships, pop culture and issues that affect Black people i.e. infertility, heart health, mental health, financial literacy, colorism, education, etc. What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with my guests and my audience in a personable and relatable way. I feel like your cousin, bestie, or your favorite auntie. I bring a wide range of topics that is universal to our Black experience. I want people to know that I truly enjoy podcasting. I take what I do seriously, and it is always my goal and intention to leave my audience with new information or a new perspective on things. If you’re feeling down, listen to my podcast, and I guarantee I’ll lift you up. If you want a good kiki, listen to my podcast and I’ll have you laughing for hours like Muni Long. Needing motivation? Listen to my podcast and you’ll be inspired not only by me, but my unique and inspiring guests.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by being my authentic self, supporting others, and staying consistent. Jay-Z said it best when he said “Nobody built like you, you designed yourself…” The Bible said it better when the word states, “You are beautifully and wonderfully made…” Therefore, be yourself. Don’t try and be the carbon copy of others. When I have found myself trying to do what others do, it didn’t feel right and it showed. Staying true to myself has yielded way better results, from hosting opportunities, speaking engagements, and being interviewed by other podcasters. Supporting others on social media builds social capital, you can’t expect others to support you, when you don’t support others. Lastly, being consistent putting out content. Even if I don’t put out an episode, I make sure I post on social media.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn and still unlearning is that scared money, don’t make money. You have to spend sometimes more than you make in order to get your name out there. I’m still learning this. Learning how to look at podcasting as a business and not only a hobby. It’s taken a while for me to grasp this concept, but I’m learning, slowly, but surely.
