We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Thrasher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler , thanks for joining us today. Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
It’s a personal priority to use my art and work to give back. There are several causes I have raised funds for including bailing protestors during the George Floyd murder protests, LGBTQ+ anti bullying causes, Loveland Foundation, Xerces Society and many more.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My work mainly revolves around combining schools of science with art. I’m mostly known for synthesizing crystals and crystallizing insects/ natural remains in my lab. I’m also a self taught botanist and have created a handful of new hybrids in the Crassula genus as well as isolating new cultivars. I own a business that creates glowing plants that are dried and will last for decades and I’m a published author with two science based books currently available. A lot of what I do is inspired by the time I spend outside or in my greenhouse either tinkering with plants or exploring cave systems in the ozarks. The time I spend with nature directly correlates to the work I create in my lab.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Hustle culture is not the goal. I found myself drowning in goal setting, overworking, and pushing my business to the edges of sanity. The end result was a stretched thin business and an exhausted and burnt out business owner. I learned that my goals should be small and focused and prioritizing self care above all meant I had more respect and less resentment for the business.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Pop ups and genuine interaction. I found my most loyal clients came from doing pop up events and having true authentic interactions. When you’re excited about your work and art it’s contagious. I make sure that excitement is shared!
