Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyler Roberson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tyler, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful is entirely dependent on your personal definition of success. What is it that you are chasing? Is it money, status, happiness, or something else? As cliche as it sounds, identifying your “why” is the first step in finding success. For me, my “why” has always been my friends, family, and people in my communities. I have a deep desire to be a provider and role model. This sets my success path to lead me to a place where I have time to spend with people I love and enough money to help if someone needs a hand. Without a reason why you are working so hard, you will only continue spinning your wheels until you burn out. In any industry, no matter how much you love what you do, there will be times you feel discouraged. There will come a time when you feel stuck or maybe even bored. It’s during these times you remember your why. That is the only thing that can fuel your desire to push through the tough times. Self help books tell us to work hard, save money, invest wisely, and sharpen our mental fortitude. That’s all great advice, but those actions are easier said than done. It’s not comfortable to take your hard earned money and invest it. It’s an absolutely brutal grind to fix your thoughts and improve your mental health. Without a reason why, you will never be able to commit long term to any goal you set.
There are necessary steps to take after finding your why. Your reason why is to serve as the foundation for the work you set out to accomplish. Earl Nightingale defines success as the progressive realization of a worthy idea or goal. In other words, success is moving in the direction of a goal, not achieving it. You must always have something you are working toward. If you aren’t consistently moving in the direction of a goal or idea, once you accomplish what you set out to, you will be left trying not to lose what you’ve accomplished. For example, let’s say you made your first million. There is nothing wrong with celebrating that accomplishment. But if you don’t continue working toward the next goal, all you’ll be able to focus on is not to lose the financial stability or lifestyle you’ve created for yourself. This will always end in disaster. It’s not sustainable. There is always something to work toward. In these moments when you reach a goal, hope is the only asset you have to continue moving. Hope for a brighter tomorrow is what gives us purpose and meaning in our professional lives. Working toward that bright future is success. Summiting Everest is the reward for a mountain climber. Each step toward the top is success.
Finally, we must acknowledge that your definition of success is unique to you. Comparison is the biggest thief of joy. If you are constantly looking at others success, you will never feel you are successful. You will constantly be trying to live in the 1 second snapshots of someone else’s dream. You can never have enough money, vacations, cars, women/men, and other materialistic desires if that is what you crave above all else. Finding things not in the material space to chase after is the only way to feel a sense of fulfillment. If you fill your heart with insatiable desire, you will quite literally never be satisfied. But if you are chasing after love, joy, health, peace, spirituality, or freedom; These are the things that truly give us what we need as human beings. Find out which of those things are most important to you to possess. I’d bank just about everything I own that everybody reading this desires every last one of those things I mentioned. Who doesn’t want to be joyful or healthy? Who among us doesn’t want to feel they are free from the chains we so desperately wish to break? That is success. What brings you happiness is unique to you. What makes you feel love, freedom, good health, and spiritually sound is going to be a little different than your wealthy neighbor down the street. Chasing after truly fulfilling goals allows the money and other material desires secondary. That does not mean they don’t matter. The money will come. You are allowed to want to own a yacht. But what will you do with yourself once you finally get the yacht? Get a bigger one? A private plane next? What good is driving your dream car around if you have no joy? Matthew 16:26 tells us, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” As a Christian, those words apply to my relationship with my savior. If you are not a believer, that verse can still be a practical application to your life. You do not need to gain the world to find success. You need to find what truly satisfies you in the deepest part of your soul.
After reading this, I hope you have a new outlook on success. Or at least a strengthened idea of it. So many people look at success as a final destination. I’ve got good news: There is no final destination until we leave this world for good. Find your success in each day. Every action you take. Break away from the fear of failure. Failure is inevitable but so is success. They come hand in hand. If you have taken one step towards the desires in your day dreams, you are successful today. You have what it takes to make a life you can be happy with. I am rooting for every last one of you the same way I am rooting for myself. As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Tyler Roberson. I am a business owner in Dayton, Ohio. I own and operate Ohio’s Greatest Music LLC. We are a multi-op DJ company that specializes in weddings, corporate events, hosting, and currently working toward the goal of breaking into professional public speaking. I have had an entrepreneur’s spirit as long as I can remember. 13 year old Tyler would have told you he was going to grow up and own his own architecture company. I am so blessed that I found this lane that I am currently thriving in. I found the original idea for Ohio’s Greatest Music while living in Arkansas ironically. I was writing, producing, and recording music at the time. In 2014, a co worker had their DJ cancel on them 10 days before their wedding. She approached me in sort of a panic, knowing I had a pretty impressive collection of equipment and asked if I could DJ a wedding. I had never done it before but I was certain I could. I DJ’d her wedding for $100. I had no idea what the market looked like or how much I was worth. I just did it. I found that I enjoyed it so much that I started doing it on the side. It was a side hustle for me from 2014-2019. I moved back to Ohio in 2016 and in February of 2020, I decided to quit my full time job and go all in on Ohio’s Greatest Music. I spent nearly every dime I had in savings to purchase equipment. Then one month later, the whole world shut down. I had to work two jobs to supplement all the projected income I had lost. I did not lose hope. I continued working diligently toward making Ohio’s Greatest Music into the best mobile DJ company I could. When the world started to open back up, a chain reaction was set in place. For all of those who had to cancel or postpone their weddings/events moved to 2021. All of the sudden, people who planned for a 2021 wedding found that dates were so booked up they had to plan for 2022. And so on. We are still seeing the influx of weddings in our industry. In 2021, Ohio’s Greatest Music DJ’d 33 weddings. In 2024, we have over 100 contracts signed for weddings alone. All in all we are currently projecting to perform nearly 160 events in total this year. That’s just me and two other guys accomplishing this. I have built Ohio’s Greatest Music to be the gold standard in DJ/MC service. We are a company that goes the extra mile for every event. We get deep in the nitty gritty of the planning so that we can execute that plan to perfection. Each moment is an opportunity to create a memory that will never be forgotten. My crew and I understand how pivotal our role is in the success of each event we serve. Our method of performance is all in the name. It’s Ohio’s Greatest. Not Ohio’s Satisfactory. I am proud of the work we have accomplished and am beyond blessed for the opportunity to continue giving Ohio’s Greatest Music the opportunity to live up to its name. We are committed to excellence and nothing less. We will continue on this path for ourselves, our clients, our community, and our industry.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I have a philosophy for reaching new clients that I absolutely live by. The first is having a website that stands out above the other companies in your area. Our website is a direct reflection of the effort we put into our business. Our website clearly states our packages and prices so that there are no hoops for potential clients to jump through to find out what they can expect to pay for our services. This allows us to only take calls from people who are serious about hiring a DJ. We don’t want to take the event where the people hiring us thinks all we have to do is click play. The second part of this philosophy is hands down the most important. That is in person networking. I’ll give you an example with a wedding. If we DJ a wedding and it winds up being just a perfect day. The couple is over the moon and the dance floor was jumping. If I truly enjoyed my experience at the venue or working with one (or all) of the vendors, I will approach them and say I would love an opportunity to work together again. There is no trick here, because I only say that to people I truly wish to work with again. This attitude of creating a network has led us to be on the preferred list of 15 venues, along with multiple photographers and wedding planners as well. Now we have streamlined leads straight from the mouths of other professionals in the industry. You can pay for ads and go to wedding shows as much as you’d like, but you will never find an easier and more efficient method than building a network of professionals in your industry. That is the case in so many other industries. There is no better lead than one that comes from word of mouth. If someone hears about Ohio’s Greatest Music from a friend, relative, former client, or fellow professional, they are more likely to be eager to speak with me and book as soon as possible. The website is important for those who may have just found us without a referral. When they reach our Home Screen, they’ll immediately be able to see our professionalism. Those two things take a lot of the leg work off of us to find new clients and allow us to focus on serving the ones we already have signed up.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We have built our reputation in the market by showing up and executing our job to perfection. (Or as close to it as possible) We open a clear line of communication with our clients and the team of professionals we work alongside at every single event. Our level of communication helps our clients feel at ease that the guys with the microphone know what they are doing. They don’t have to worry about what’s next because the orchestrater of the flow of their event helped plan it. We also continue to master the craft of mixing music and reading crowds to make sure that each one that we play to is having the time of their lives. We get to know our clients needs, desires, and vision well before the event. I accept full responsibility for what my clients want to see, feel, and hear at their big day. That is our job. To execute the unique vision of every single event we show up to. Anyone that works with Ohio’s Greatest Music will notice how much our heart is in what we do, and that continues carrying the splendid reputation we’ve built thus far.
