We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Parker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Everybody knows learning also takes discipline. But it’s so much easier when you’ve got nudges as well. I got that from Rtillery. He guided me through what we’ve seen up to this point. We met when we were freshmen and we had early laughs often. We still do. But those touches of laughter built a competitive bond that silently guides us From there, I just pulled from my memory in music to progress and fine-tune the craft. It isn’t easy, but that’s part of how I have fun with it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tyler Parker, A.K.A TK. I am a 23-year producer, engineer, and songwriter from Illinois. I mainly produce instrumentals for media and commercial use, but I also have knowledge of mixing and mastering vocals as well as songwriting. I’ve been involved with music since I was in elementary school, but I didn’t start actively using tech in music until I was a freshman at Florida State University. I have a very nerdy interest in video games, space, and astronomy that I try to incorporate into my music while maintaining industry standards as well. My classical music training helps me portray this idea through synths, strings, pianos, and a lot of effects. I’m proud to be part of multiple projects with tens (and sometimes hundreds) of thousands of streams. I have connected with many different types of people and heard countless stories of life because of music and that is something I’m most proud of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was working with an artist and they were having a feature sent in. However, the vocals were way too loud and we had too many issues getting the stems from the feature. This was a song that was going on a bigger project and the artist didn’t want to scrap the song. So, I worked a bit of magic to get the vocals out of the version they sent us and re-mixed it to match the song. It was a huge boost of confidence because I produced the beat as well. I was ready to scrap the song and maybe see if it could be placed elsewhere, even though I knew this song was a good fit for the beat. Yet, I didn’t have to and it’s about to roll out for commercial listening soon. Don’t give up until you know you’ve tried any and everything you can.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In my experience, building an audience via content is like sales. You need two main things. For one, it has to be presented in a professional way that matches you as a person. Don’t go outside of yourself because you think copying someone else success plan is your ticket upward. Grabbing ideas and making them fit you is what helps create and maintain traction. Secondly, is consistency and I don’t mean consistently recreating what you did yesterday. Consistently making the effort to grow in yourself and your craft is what leads to growth. Your audience will acknowledge this in their own ways.
