We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler Mills. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler below.
Hi Tyler, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Coming up things were easy for me, I have a dominant personality so whatever I saw, I went after and the only question I asked is ” Who’s going to stop me?” Nighltlife guru, party host, charity founder, while also assisting in many other business ventures makes up a pretty extensive resume. Today, owning your own company, creating your own schedule, being your own boss, etc. is the new norm. But sometimes you wonder did you make the right decision? The opportunities are endless, but so is the stress of building. Being a business owner makes me happy because it is what I am destined to do, and I enjoy the hustle and bustle of creating something from scratch. But, very rarely I sometimes miss having a regular job. When you are starting/running a business everything falls back on you, there is no boss to call or there is no leaving the work for someone else, its up to YOU to make It happen. Sometimes you won’t feel like getting out of bed, some days you want things to be moving faster then they are, somedays you are on a high and feel invincible, some days you are at the bottom and want to crawl into the fetal position. It all boils down to how bad you want to be successful. It is Never easy, but is it worth it, absolutely. I would choose the business life over having a regular job any day.
Tyler, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I watched a friend of mine dominate the beauty industry. We tried to come up with something for me to do, so The Body Section was born. He focus was skincare, so I sought to do something completely different. Our main focus is body art, and cosmetics. Body sculpting/conturing is our highest seller to date. We also have services such as non invasive lip fillers, fat dissolver shots, waxing, lash extensions and also teeth whitening. The though behind this project was to become a hub for beauty and cosmetics wherever you see fit. What sets me apart from others would be my results, I am strict with my clients on gaining the overall results we spoke about during our consultation. I am most proud of me, seeing this, writing it down, and actually having it come to life right before my eyes still shock me today. We ALL have insecurities, and things we want to improve about ourselves, I make sure to make every client feel as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process of each service. From the moment you enter our doors, you will feel supported and comfortable with whatever service you are receiving.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses
Yes! Ive actually bought a preschool pre COVID, which was one of the most rewarding projects thus far in my life. A friend of mine was actually looking to get out of the preschool business and there was some talk about him getting rid of it. Long before this acquisition, I wanted to own and operate a private school. Education and representation are so important to me. My plans were to grasp children at the cognitive stage in. the lives where they are soaking up everything around them and figuring out who they are, likes, dislikes etc. (Preschool age) Everything I do, I think BIG. So I planned to monopolize the market, and then expand into a K-8 and then into high school. Representation is everything, children and young adults need to see someone that not only looks like them, but can be relatable to them being a pioneer. That was my mission. When the acquisition happened it was almost an overnight change. I went to acquire my childcare directors license and jumped right into the mix. Unfortunately, the acquisition did not make it past the covid stage for various reasons, but overall that experience was empowering and I will never forget it. I plan to return to this business model soon.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivot, a word I’ve used so many times. Life can be very unpredictable, but we always have to play the hand we are dealt. I’ve always wanted to be “somebody” of importance, a boss, and a well respected individual. My down fall was trying to drink from every cup of opportunity offered to me, in the name of friendship, “business” , advancement and so much more. Now, I do take full responsibility for every action leading up to this point because of my selfless actions, I sometimes fell like I could’ve/should’ve been further but I’ve learned that you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Previously, I talked about the preschool I invested in that closed down, before that I was a nightlife promoter/host, insurance agent, and many other things. Before opening my business, I had to sit down with myself and really come to terms with that I wanted to do next, something long term, something that would trump everything I’ve done, that’s when The Body Section came about. Something all mine, something I would have to constantly work at to become better. At the age of 25, things have to start making sense, pieces have to connect to lead to a bigger picture, and life actually starts to become real. No matter where you are currently, stay focused, stay optimistic, stay hopeful and pray constantly.
