Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyler Martina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Tyler thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?

The story behind naming our tattoo and piercing studio Mr. Inkwells is pretty interesting.

To begin with, we wanted to name the shop after a fictional character, like the Michelin Man, Pillsbury Doughboy, or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. We didn’t want to name the shop after a single person, because any business is bigger than that. There is no such thing as a “one man show”, it takes a group of people working together for a business to be successful.

We were also inspired by the look of the octopus with the top hat and monocle, it’s a classic tattoo idea that easily makes you think of a tattoo shop. Plus, an octopus squirts ink, and we kind of squirt ink into your skin, so you can see how those work together, and makes for the perfect tattoo shop mascot. Next, we had to come up with a name. We wanted something that immediately made you think of tattoos, and we landed on Mr. Inkwells.

At Mr. Inkwells we are a collective of artists working toward a common goal. We all have our own talents and a specific role to play, when we execute this great things happen, things we could never do on our own. We are stronger and more effective together. Just an octopus. Each of an octopus’s tentacles has its own brain, it works independently of the rest of the octopus, but in unison with the octopus and all the other tentacles. This is what makes octopus so great, and what makes us so great. Mr. Inkwells, the blue octopus and our business philosophy represents this. We are all separate and amazing individuals, and we choose to work together to be something even greater.

Tyler, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Why name is Tyler Martina, and I have been a part of the tattoo and piercing industry since I can remember. I love the world of tattoo and piercings, and I wanted to share that love with as many people as possible by creating a tattoo shop that makes getting high quality tattoos and piercings accessible to everyone. I also wanted to create a space for tattoo and piercings artists where they could thrive professional, and personally. That is what Mr. Inkwells is.

We have been open fro just 5 years and are already the highest rated, most reviewed tattoo and piercing shop in Southern California. We provided almost every tattoo and piercing service from the industries best artists, as well as things like apparel, and tattoo and piercings aftercare. In fact we just finished our new line of premium tattoo aftercare ” Ink by Mr. Inkwells”, it’s all natural, cruelty free, made in the USA, and used and designed by real tattoo artists and skincare experts.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.

Finding and sourcing a company to make products is a long process, you must be patient, and stay focused on the end goal. When making our premium tattoo aftercare line “ink by Mr. Inkwells” it took years to find our perfect formula and design our products.

We new what we wanted, the best tattoo aftercare products to help people heal their tattoos. We wanted them to be all natural, cruelty free, and made in the USA. Just like we made getting tattoos and piercing easy for people, we wanted to aftercare easy for people too.

We learned in the process that you need to meet with many manufactures, get a lot of samples, and like I said above, stay patient.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

The way we built our business reputation in the market was simple. Read that again, “simple”, not “easy”. We did this by constantly providing the best tattoos and piercings and the best experience.

Day and in and day out we all do our best. The customers see that, And Mr. Inkwells reputation for excellence grows.
