Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyler Lindvall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Tyler thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.

Thank you! Owning a Family business for the last 16 years has definitely provided many highs and lows. For starters, there is a tremendous amount of flexibility, but what I have experienced is that it takes a lot of energy and time to be flexible. You have to work twice as hard to establish a good base, a good team and a good customer base in order to realize the flexible nature. That said, it is awesome to be able to duck out to my Daughters sports, head up to the mountains mid-week etc. Also Working alongside my Wife makes for an interesting dynamic. It is hard for some to understand this relationship but without her, there would be no Harmonic. We work hand in hand every day and I believe the success in that relationship is that we both focus on very different areas of the business. She works in the HR and Finance seat while I am more the Creative and overall process person when it come to how to tackle the details of a project. Some might say we work in Harmony :)!

The other Pro is seeing how our Daughters appreciate what we are building. They have a growing understanding of what it is like to start and run a company. For good or bad, we are all in it together!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Harmonic Media is a comprehensive large format custom printing company located in Denver, Colorado. While some companies simply take a digital file and print it, Harmonic starts each project with a conversation to understand your goals, work within your budget and deliver the custom printing solution that best meets your needs.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?

My business partner also just happens to be my life partner! My wife, Barb Lindvall, and I first met in 2001 at a bar in LoDo. At the time, entrepreneurship was the furthest thing from our minds. We were just two kids navigating a relationship. It wasn’t until years later when we had built a solid foundation as a couple that we began entertaining the idea of building a business.

We recognized that our unique and different skill sets complemented one another. Barb had a background in finance and was very calculated in her decision-making and planning. Whereas I had a creative eye and the innate ability to combine strategy with aesthetics. When our forces combined, it resulted in the Harmonic Media the Denver community (and beyond) has come to know and trust with all of their custom printing needs.

I feel truly blessed that my work allows me to do what I love with the person I love.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

I have always believed in the philosophy of NEVER burning a bridge and now, as a business owner, it has become all the more important. This applies to everyone with whom I cross paths from customers and vendors to employees and fellow entrepreneurs. To some, it may sound like an easy goal to accomplish but don’t let that fool you. It takes a great amount of commitment to always leave things on a positive note.
