We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Kelbert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tyler thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success to me is how many people you’ve helped while you have been on earth. I try to help as many people as I can, that’s one of the reason why I’m an instructor at a college.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got inspired by my barber in florida, I loved how he was always apart of the community and help lots of people including myself in my area. I wanted to be like him for sure but everyone pushed that college was the way so I went to college. Then When I lived in Japan I was on a set and saw hairstylists doing cool hairstyles and it got me interested again. After I graduated college I went to barber school and got licensed and shortly after got my instructors license and cosmetology license.
I think what sets me apart is that I do straight and curly hair as well as both long and short hair.
The thing im most proud of is the amount of people ive helped in the industry and the awesome relationships that come with it.

How did you build your audience on social media?
1. Engagement on social media When it comes to engagement, I think the key is consistency. You’re gonna have some videos that hit and some that don’t but when you stay consistent and one of your videos does go viral new viewers, can view your page and see all your content and want to follow you because of the consistency that you have .
2. Adding personality to content
I think it’s important to have personality included in your content because people want to see the person behind the brand they wanna see who they’re invested in . I think having a variety of Contant, such as tutorial videos, Funny videos, product reviews, editorial photos, podcast clips, Vlogs, etc. can give your page life and not make it look boring. I think if you have the same type of content all over your page, it can’t get boring such as if you just had haircuts and that’s all you posted. I think a good way of thinking about your page is imagining your page like a TV series, a TV series has new episodes with new content and is consistent on their drop dates.
3. Figuring out social media
I think a great way to figure out the content you want to make is follow people who inspire you on social media. And as far as getting better or learning more, I think taking a social media course can definitely help, I personally took Marvy Marv social media course and it helped and inspired me a lot.
4. 3 DON’T DOs
-Don’t set your Instagram profile to private, make sure it is public so new customers and new people are able to see your profile and check out your work.
-Don’t just post a video and not utilize instagrams features to help boost your post. Make sure your have a caption, hashtags, 3 topics, location, tags, etc. (Don’t over use hashtags though)
-Don’t ignore your followers, make sure to engage with them in someway.
-Don’t be afraid to post! You might feel like you don’t have the right equipment or it’s not perfect or have other excuses why not to post but everyone starts somewhere. Embrace the beginning of your adventure and post that photo or video. Create that new habit of posting and enjoying your new social media journey.
-Don’t Give up, you got this!
5. How can people can make sure that their social media reflects their personalities and professional specialisms
I think it’s just about being yourself and being true to who you are. Don’t try to be anyone else, just be your authentic self. The industry that we are in is very accepting, you don’t have to fake the Funk. If you have tattoos show them off, you don’t have to cover them up with the long sleeve like some professional jobs. Just be you and let your personality shine.
6. Paid Ads
I think paid ads work great. I’ve used them on my expo Instagram page and it definitely has helped with traffic and getting new customers to come to the expo. I have friends that like to use Instagram paid ads for their Barber Shop or Salon business page and it has helped them get new clients as well. The cost of ads on social I think is very cheap and well worth it.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I think being a Servant leader is the best way to manage a team and maintain high morale. Servant leadership is a leadership style that prioritizes the growth, well-being, and empowerment of employees. It aims to foster an inclusive environment that enables everyone in the organization to thrive as their authentic self.
