We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler Joshua Green. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler Joshua below.
Tyler Joshua, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Faith is risk taking. Ministry, activism, entrepreneurship all require the hope internally that offsets the hopelessness of this dark world. The word entrepreneur even means “person of faith.” It takes a great deal of faith to create, organize and produce anything innovative or creative. My ministry, rooted solely in my faith in God, has yielded opportunities in social justice activism, entrepreneurial endeavors and academic arenas. In other words, the faith incubated by the church has birthed opportunities to share that faith, hope and love with the larger world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I would classify my service in the discipline category of the options provided. Although ministry includes both ‘craft’ and ‘business’, it requires discipline. This is why Jesus’ closest followers were known as disciples. Through my faith to follow Christ, the disciplines Jesus rendered for ministry, activism and even entrepreneurship are also found. This discipline to focus on the faith instilled in my childhood as an adult has provided opportunities throughout the U.S. and Africa to preach, teach, write and organize.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Over the course of the pandemic and frankly, prior to the pandemic, churches nationwide experienced a decline in attendance. The virtual platform for streaming services were still in question by many churches. While working with churches, organizations and institutions of higher education it became clear that virtual platforms would transform how we gather and organize. Renovating churches, revamping programs and reestablishing systems for our communities has required a technological shift that I encouraged churches, pastors and leaders to implement prior to the pandemic. Several colleagues have shared their appreciation for my encouragement to implement virtual services and online content given the head start it gave their organizations and institutions during the pandemic. This pivotal window in time is an example of how my charges to leaders in public and private have made lasting effects for houses of faith and social justice organizations. Out of this effort came the United Churches of America, a post-covid, post-denominational, virtual platform that highlights churches nationwide implementing innovative social justice practices.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
There are many who take up the office of minister out of personal ambition but I am persuaded that I’ve been called into ministry as well as the various secular spaces where I’ve done ministry. Although I chose to accept the call to ministry at a very early age, this ministry, this craft, profession/specialty is one that has chosen me. I believe as a result of my early faith, I was called to a greater level of faith through ministry. I’m grateful for the realization of the revels that God will take us from faith to faith and from glory to glory.
