We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Jorgensen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Owning and running a family business with multiple family members can be rewarding as well as difficult to navigate. There are many reasons for this. When it comes to being rewarding, we get to hang out with each other everyday. We can have conversations about many different things and make sure the other is doing well. Not many people get to spend the kind of time with their family as we do. On the other hand, it can be very tricky if you allow it to be. There are many dichotomies in how to handle tough situations in a family owned and operated business. How do you have a tough conversation with a family member and still be able to retain the relationship? How do you show up for the others in ownership as well as yourself? How do you present yourself to the other owners in the business? For us the most important thing is to retain the relationship. If we’re being entirely honest with ourselves, we need to come from a place within ourselves of finding a way to add value and service to each other. If we are consistently selfish in our thoughts and actions within the business, as well as any relationship, we will find all the problems between us that weren’t problems in the first place or didn’t need to become problems. But if we can all find a way to consistently serve each other, I do believe that’s where the best of all of us truly comes out. If we can come together, make decisions, and do our part then the dream works. If we choose to be more selfish and not do our part, things can fall apart and even the relationships we have with each other in and outside of work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Tyler Jorgensen. I’m one of the new 3rd generation owners of Jorgensen’s Inc. I love pretty much everything outdoors but especially outdoor recreation like motorcycles, ATV’s, and side by sides. My Grandfather, back in the 50’s, started a business that was a jewelry store. He morphed the business from time to time to different types of items for sale but then ended up buying a bowling alley and also became the first Honda motorsports dealership in Utah. He was a very hard working man and had his two sons, Dennis and Mike, working with him. Years later, Dennis and Mike became the new owners and with the help of some employees that have been with us since the beginning, grew it to where it is today. Recently, Mike retired and my two brothers and I, Camron and Jared, recently became the 3rd generation owners along with my father Dennis Jorgensen. Today we carry many of the major powersports brands including Honda, Polaris, Can-Am, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM, and soon to be a Stark Varg dealer. We also do bicycles, sporting goods, camp trailers and utility trailers. We also have an online business, a Ford dealership, Chevy dealership, a fitness center, and the best lunch spot in Richfield located inside our bowling alley. We have a lot of history in our business especially with longtime employees who, to us, have morphed into family. We also have many members of our family who work here and who have also worked here long term.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our reputation comes from doing business as the feeling of a small town family owned business. We have respect for our customers. We believe in honesty and integrity in everything we do here and if something happens we find out that isn’t, we will find out what it was and rectify it. We treat our customers like we want them to come back because………. we do want them to come back! We like to form relationships and actually hear the stories of our customers first rides. We believe in having a culture that seems to be disappearing in todays market. It really isn’t difficult to treat people with respect, patience, and always working to find win win situations. We now have grown to multiple different businesses and you’ll find the same treatment at every one of them.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Taking care of the customer. Doing business in a non stressful and easy going environment. Creating pleasant experiences while the customer is here and after. We are not high pressure and we like to actually take the time to get to know people.
