We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Ingersoll a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tyler thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
One of the biggest challenges that I face is the over saturation of the market that is photography. Many times I will sell myself to people who may be in need of photography services; however, they won’t be in need of them, for they already have a photographer booked for those occasions
Or, I’ll be photographing an event and I’ll look to sell my high quality images, but no one will be interested because they were given lower quality images for free.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tyler. I’ve been doing photography for well over 2 years. I originally started by taking my own photos with a Samsung Note 8, tripod, and shutterbug. 2 years later I’ve since upgraded to a Canon R5; paired with high quality Sigma glass, and been a freelance photographer/ “lens for hire” for all sorts of occasions.
I’ve done everything from maternity/newborn, cars, pets, couples, wildlife, and so much more.
I don’t shy away from any photography opportunity that is presented my way. I pride myself in broading my horizons; being a “jack of all trades”, so I can create long lasting memories for any client that is looking to book me no matter the occasion!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I fortunately work a customer service job, so I can connect with people from all walks of life. Alot of my clients are people that I’ve worked with, or actual customers of mine. These people have been crucial to my business because if not for them I wouldn’t receive all the referrals that come my way from their word of mouth.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to become a reputable photographer within my county, so I can create those forever memories for people within my community.
