We were lucky to catch up with Tyler Humphrey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I worked in a traditional PT clinic for 7 years. I would see 15-20 clients per day, which quickly resulted in burnout. Most of the clients weren’t motivated, and for the ones that were, I didn’t have the time or space to appropriately challenge them in rehab.
My biggest challenge when starting Bulletproof was finding a location that met our clients’ needs. Active individuals are terribly underserved in the traditional PT model. Using a 5 pound ankle weight and thera-band doesn’t adequately prepare you to run a marathon or put a barbell over your head. Luckily, I had a good relationship with Facet Seven from my time working out there, and I approached ownership with my vision for Bulletproof. Thankfully, they saw something in me, and allowed me to operate the business out of their facility.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I went to college on a rowing scholarship with no idea what I wanted to study. I was exposed to PT while spending time in the training room recovering from some minor injuries.
We describe our treatment style at Bulletproof as Performance Therapy. You won’t come in and lay on a hot pack, stretch, and ride a stationary bike for the majority of your treatment. Rehab needs to match the demands of your sport. For that reason, we operate out of a gym setting so that we can rehab you like an athlete, and get you truly back to 100%.
We do every session 1 on 1 with one of our Doctors. We don’t believe in seeing 3-4 clients per hour, or using techs and aides. Your injury is unique to you, so your rehab should be as well.
Our mission statement at Bulletproof is to get you back to your sport pain free, while providing the best healthcare experience you’ve ever had.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Sweat equity. Bulletproof is rehab for athletes, by athletes. Every one of our Docs played college sports, and is passionate about health and fitness.
We are passionate about what we do, and very much walk the walk. People are smart. They can see if you aren’t passionate and experienced. Nothing better than dropping into a gym with one of our clients, and getting a pain free workout in!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My number one rule is never asking our team to do anything I wouldn’t do myself. Number two would be frequent and transparent communication. I meet with each team member one on one on a weekly basis. It helps me stay connected with them, and to keep up with how things are going both personally and professionally.
Thankful doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel abut the team we’ve assembled at Bulletproof. The staff is full of rock stars, and I’m so grateful to work with them on a daily basis.
