We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Graham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope one day my legacy will be for creating art and a safe space for everyone to be who they want to be. That’s why I love photography. I love letting my subjects be who they want to be, act how they want to be, let their inhibitions run wild. It’s amazing the art that can come out when you relax and let yourself be free. I want my legacy to be creating art and a safe space that inspires further generations.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Tyler Graham, owner of Tyler Ryan Studio. I first started out doing photography in August 2011 when friends asked me to photograph their engagement and wedding (talk about no pressure starting out). I also started my journey with photography at the time I went off to college to study graphic design. I wanted to create a studio that not only encompassed these skills but also that left me room to grow, which has grown to include website design, branding, and event production. In terms of photography, I work with each model to curate a shoot specific to their needs, style, and vision. For graphic and web design, I bring my clients thoughts to life whether is creating a new brand for their company, a website to market and sell products, or simply some new creative materials, I make sure to follow the guidelines set by my clients while also creating pieces that are unique and stand out from the clutter. What sets me apart from others is the care and attention I give to my models and clients regardless of the project or shoot. I want to bring their ideas to life just as much as mine.
One thing I am most proud of is how much my creativity has grown in the last year or so alone. I used to photograph weddings for ten years, but I switched when I realized that I wasn’t happy or inspired. Now, I have produced so many new projects, ventures, ideas, etc. to the point where I am bursting at the seams. I want people to know that I am always working to become better and to learn more. I am very excited for the future and what is to come!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is so hard. Each platform changes the algorithm so much, but I will say that my following started to grow more once I changed my style and started to really grow from my photography after stepping away from weddings. As I said, the algorithm changes so frequently but telling stories, showing off people’s authentic self, creating art has been resonating more with my followers. Be true and consistent with who you are. Do your research. Take the time. It will take some time so do not get discouraged.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I would’ve taken more time to network with other creatives when I first started out. I have a pretty good network now but, in the beginning, I was googling a lot, stalking people’s feeds, etc but I never reached out because I was partially nervous but also because I was insecure. I wish I would’ve gotten out of my comfort zone and made those connections.
