We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Dunn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
The Photography Industry strives on being unique. Being different from others to maintain some sort of need to work with different people.
But a major industry norm is to edit on a personal computer or laptop. This, is something I do not do. All of my editing, (besides what’s absolutely required) is done on my mobile setup (iPhone, and iPad).
A lot of people who I have met in the Industry have questioned me about it but in the end, the work talks for you and I definitely am confident in my product.
Tyler, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Photography Business is definitely a oversaturated market with the recent boom in photographers who want to make it a living. I started just before that, back almost 8ish years ago, I wanted to take better photos than what I did when I was a kid. My parents caught on and bought my a Canon T6i, this was the fundamental start I needed to begin a career as a photographer.
A few things I strive to do differently than others is create something that feels real. The work I do resembles movie posters. I want you to look into the photo and see the character and relate to it. Working with people to achieve this while maintaining a fun and healthy environment is always my top priority. I strive to keep myself not super serious all the time and just enjoy what I do.
Doing just that has created a loving and exciting community of people I enjoy working with over and over, and I I keep producing more photos, the community expands!
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I began photography as a side hustle / hobby. That slowly began more and more popular through social media. Eventually I talked with a few professionals and worked out a pricing plan and a website to begin charging rates at events.
This took many years or wanting and not wanting. Eventually it was obvious that what I am doing can easily be a full job.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Being located in Florida. There is a surplus of people who take photography super seriously and that creates a super competitive market. First diving into this, I had to make sure I was always on top of advertising and communication with people to ensure I would continue getting bookings. Slowly after realizing that it would be a never ending battle, I began to look into other options of building relationships with people to maintain a “demand” to work with me over others. I dropped a lot of the advertising that normally everyone does and began creating a community and a image that people can relate to so when it comes time to book, they choose who they almost relate and feel comfortable with! It’s a win, win, because the amount of absolutely amazing people I have now met and became friends with also are my clients and it makes the job that much more enjoyable.
