Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyler D’Shun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tyler thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I would’ve started my career a lot sooner but I believe in divine timing and everything happens the way it does for a reason. If you just align your thoughts with your actions and just give your all in everything you do. I always knew I would have a career somewhere in the arts just never knew exactly where. I was very passionate about theatre and dancing at one point. Who would’ve known I would be a hairstylist, I didn’t get my start until 2017, going into my junior year of college at Alabama State University, where I was majoring in communications, with a focus in Radio & TV. It was going to be my first year also not being a cheerleader, and that was my passion. But I didn’t want to go through surgery, and rehab to still sit out the the entire season still, that would’ve hurt me ore than anything honestly. There’s nothing I would’ve changed about the experience, just wish I would’ve been able to cheer one more year at least, but if I knew back then I would be where I’m going now, I wouldn’t have worried myself at all. I was really stressed out because I wasn’t even interested in my major anymore and it would be long before I would have to make a decision to either finish it out find another passion before senior approached. I’m thankful for where I am now, and can’t wait to see where my career lands me in the next few years or so.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tyler Richardson. I’m 25 years young, from a small town in Alabama with dreams bigger than city & state itself. I used to attend Alabama State University, but I left and went Paul Mitchell The School – Atlanta just a few weeks after finishing my junior year at ASU. I packed up and moved to Georgia with nothing but a dream and what personal belongings could fit in my car at the time. I didn’t have any plans other than knowing for a fact I was going to go to hair school no matter what and I was going to build a name for myself wherever my career landed me.
I traded my megaphone and cheer shoes for hot tools and sheers almost 6 years ago, I am a hairstylist specializing in natural hair and extension services and also a content creator.
I solve any and all hair problems a perspective client of mine may have. What sets my apart from others is most definitely my customer service, my personality & my content. I am very passionate about everything I do from beginning to end and it shows in my work and in my content.
I’m most proud of the fact I’ve been able to be myself authentically and do what I love. In a just few short years of being here, I was able to make a means of living just from doing hair. Many people thought it was impossible, but I defied all odds against me and even transitioned from working from home to working in a full service salon.
The main thing I want any potential clients, followers or fans of mine to know is to always trust your struggle. I never doubted any of the process I’ve gone through and I don’t regret any of it. It all made me who I am today and continues to mold me for greater to come. I am a born leader and I know I will reach the goals I have set in stone, and many others can reach their goals as well. You just have to be determined, lock in on that tunnel vision and eliminate any distractions. I didn’t care who I had to cut off to get where I am, your peace and energy is more important than anything. Protect it at all cost! Don’t ever let anyone tell you can’t be anything or do what you want, it took me a while to find myself but I knew I was determined to find him by an means necessary. Stay humble and never think that anyone owes you anything.. if anything, you owe it to yourself to work towards a better future. I didn’t want to always struggle and I definitely didn’t want to work for someone else for the rest of my life. I wanted a career & platform where I could be authentic, and unapologetically myself at any hour if the day.
“If you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Is a quote I live by and will never forget. I am truly passionate about what I do, if I could bless many others around the world with my gift I promise I would. My works speaks for itself ladies and gentlemen, I’m hungrier than ever before and I’m determined. So make sure you never forget my name.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is the priceless reactions on my clients face after I turn them around to see the finished results of their hair. The expression makes my day every single time and it always reminds me of what I started.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve been through so much since I’ve moved to Georgia but I never gave up. A lot of friends and family showed me their true colors through it all, although I never speak on much of what I went through. I didn’t have stable housing, would sleep in my car sometimes and would drive back to Alabama to stay with friends when I just really needed to regroup from all the stress I endured during school. I truly thank those friends that helped me when I didn’t have a dime to my name and had nowhere else to go. I didn’t have a strong support system for most or what I’ve been through but I always kept my faith through it all. It’s still a touchy subject and I won’t go into full detail but fast forward to when the pandemic hit in 2019.. Hair school was going to be virtual, my cousin kicked me out of her house and I went back to Alabama and during the pandemic I leveled up and used all I been through to fuel me to move back Georgia and finish hair school. September 2019 I was able to move back to with a new car and also my first apartment at well.
Shortly after returning back to campus instead of distance learning, I was forced to withdraw because I lost my financial aid during the pandemic and I didn’t have the money to pay out pocket snd they swore there was no other solution or even tried to help me finish my last 300 hours.
I was devastated at first but I knew that just meant better was in store for me, I’ve been able to grow my clientele and focus on other things and save up to go back to school and finish what I started.
