We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler below.
Tyler, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
When you work in a field such as videography or photography, much of the job is sitting at a computer and editing. This is a part of the job for a lot of other careers as well. When you become your own boss, r work from home, some of the most important lessons you will learn are time management and work/life balance.
Numerous studies have shown that too much screen time has adverse effects on our mental and physical health. As a video editor, it can be easy to sit at my computer for 6 or 8 hours and not take my eyes off a screen. Editing on my computer, the TV playing a show in the background, or an email reply on my phone. It can be hard to realize just how much screen time you are actually getting.
For myself, I have found that being inside and connected so much, makes me crave to be outdoors and around nature. I take small breaks throughout the day and step outside to listen to the birds, or touch up the garden. These 5-10 minutes every couple hours are as important to me, as getting my work finished. I try to get out and hike or go on a walk around the neighborhood as many days as I can. This is how you can start allowing yourself small “vacations” every day.
Taking large vacations is something everyone wants to do, and being your own boss it is much easier to find the time to take trips. However, allowing ourselves to take small vacations throughout the work day is really where the magic of being your own flourishes, especially working in videography or photography.
Tyler, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started doing videography in high school in a videography class, which quickly lead to me becoming the editor for our school news program. After graduation, I began interning with videography crews, and slowly grew in my craft. In 2020 I started my own company, Farmbrook Media. We specialize in event videography and photography, our favorite being weddings!
