We recently connected with Tyler Butler and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I wish I had the capability and time to start this business earlier. It would have been more challenging to manage due to my hectic schedule. I would have invested more time learning about graphic design, photography, and videography. Apps like Canva have allowed me to showcase my graphic design skills, but I wish I had known these skills years ago and taken advantage of an untapped market.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tyler Butler, and I started my own Sports Media Company called Sports & Culture Media. We provide coverage for individuals involved in sports from elementary schools up to Pro Sports. We go out in our community, write stories, and provide highlights, interviews, and graphics for anyone involved in sports. I started this company because I saw a lack of coverage for women’s sports in my area. News outlets, radio stations, or bloggers do not provide a platform for women in sports. We saw that need and decided to fulfill it. From there, we branched off and started covering all ages and genders. Our focus is providing a platform for the younger athletes which will allow them to gain exposure, thus leading to future scholarship offers.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My best advice for starting your social media presence is to understanding your demographic! Know the age group viewing your content and study the platforms they gravitate towards most. If your demographic is the younger generation, then you need to explore what is trending and focus on Instagram and Tik Tok. The older generation is mainly on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Learn how to adapt to each forum to gain the attention of those on the network.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The best lesson I have learned was to figure out my lane and stick with it. The biggest mistake I made starting was going away from my business plan while taking advice from others on how to run my company. I would look at other companies similar to mine and mimic what they were doing. That took away from the main reason I created Sports & Culture. I had no structure and was not making any impact on my community. I pivoted back to my original business plan and grew faster in three months than I have in the previous 12 months combined.
