We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Armstrong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
So i actually started the business because I wanted to become a real estate investor. I wanted to be able to go in look at properties and determine what repairs needed to be made to homes to help calculate budgets, numbers for said projects. So I thought what better way to gain this knowledge than to become a home inspector. So i went to class, started the business became licensed and then this thing flew off the handle. I called everyone and let them know my new venture. I called realtors, investors, contacted property managers, old friends and anyone I could think of. We did our first couple of inspections and people really liked the way we worked and wanted to know more about us and work with us. The volume of work grew tremendously. As far as what I had to figure out. It was everything. From book keeping, to coordination of time resources, extra training networking and so on. The biggest thing was how to balance my old position as a paramedic in the fire service while growing a business. Fortunately the mindset of being a paramedic helped me a lot with the ability to adapt and overcome any challenge,

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the industry to learn how homes are built and how they function to become a real estate investor. I wanted to know what i was getting myself into when buying homes. That idea quickly shifted to trying to be the best inspector in my industry. That honest what I strive for now. The problems i sold for my clients. I would have to say when they are about to make the biggest purchase of their lives, I am able to provide clarity on what it is that they are getting themselves into. A lot of clients are realtors and investors as well. I feel like I assist that market best with time constraints. We have very diversified services that we offer and being a one stop shops helps them with scheduling and coordination with the fast pace that occurs in a real estate transaction. I think what sets us apart from others is that you can call our company and have ent inspection service performed by us in house with no need to call anyone else. Being a one stop shop is very convenient. I’m most proud of what my business does for my community. I was raised in Catonsville and am very proud of where I come from. Being able to help with donations and coordinate getting dugouts on the fields at Catonsville high school where my nieces play softball is my most proud moment for sure.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The time that I had to pivot in my business was for the good. I was a paramedic of 10 years in the fire service. I did that full time while running the business earlier on. The pivot I had to make was to leave a salaried position to focus on my business because I came to an all or nothing point where I was going to start losing business on account of being on a medic unit. So my pivot was to just quit my career and jump in feet first.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think the story that describes my resilience is my ability to stay awake as simple as it may sound. My old position in the fire service required my to work two 10 hour days and two 14 hour night works and being off four days. Well I learned that the world of business never sleeps. I would works days inspect at night. Work nights inspect by day. Once every 10 days I would be awake for 3 days straight. All 4 days off it was go go go. That was the toughest part.
