We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler Adair. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler below.
Tyler, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
After living in four states, Seventeen years of football, and too many of life’s ups and downs, I was looking for stability and a place to settle. After my time in Hawaii I moved to Downtown Los Angeles, which may seem opposite of what I was trying to achieve. But I found stability in a crazy world. I became a State Investigator after obtaining my degree in Criminal Justice and took my knowledge in fitness and became a Private Personal trainer. I worked from Eight to Five, had my clients after, and finished the night with my workout and my day was done. I achieved stability and a regimented schedule. My goal at last was achieved and I continued that same path for two years. Until I was presented a once in a lifetime opportunity. I had the pleasure of working under a Venture Capitalist who had exposed me to a world I had never seen before. But in order to take and make the best out of this opportunity I had to trade in that stability that I was looking for and venture off into the world of Entrepreneurship. However I knew I could always fall back on that stability if needed. However this risk was unknown as entrepreneurship was something I never thought about pursuing. But as my time working has come to an end I have not only succeeded far past my expectations but I achieved something I never thought I could. I know have obtained my Real Estate License and have created a business in Orange County not only selling homes but have also created and maintained a prolific Personal Training business, having transformed over 30 clients in one year. Which I am now bringing to Austin as Texas has always been a place I wanted to live. That is my next risk and I want to continue to grow in each sector of. Business and open a fitness facility in the city to help others in any goal they wish to achieve. It also allowed me to create a mentorship program where I help guide young men ages 18-22 into the person they looked up to as a young kid. I traded that stability I was craving into freedom where I am my own boss and it allows me to give back which has been a crucial part of what drives me to be successful, helping and seeing others succeed just as much as I want that for myself. Most importantly, what Lessons did I learn? Take the risk.
Tyler, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In my short 29 years of life I have pretty much faced every situation you can imagine from being at the top to being at rock bottom. But competing runs in my blood. Being a multi sport athlete through high school to winning a national championship in Junior college and receiving two scholarships to two separate schools in college, competition and being the best was who I was. But after being in life threatening accident in 2018 My focus and my perspective on life changed and that event slowed me down. I survived, but at a cost. However being the natural fighter I am I didn’t allow that to hold me back.
I then had an opportunity to work and give my time in Hawaii on the big island in the city of Hilo. Having grown up with Polynesians as brothers, the culture was instilled in me. However being on the island allowed me to further change my perspective on life. I came home with a sense of love for the land and I saw people in a different light. I came home with a goal of changing whatever I can for the better, wherever I was. I wanted to change everything within my reach. Whether that was people i encountered day to day or the land I walked on. I wanted to help.
After achieving my goal of utilizing my degree I obtained a job as an investigator where I could help change and resolve others outcomes, But the main goal was when I was off the clock. I wanted to help people personally change not only their bodies, but their minds. And that yearn for changing environments is what pushed me to where I am at today, Not only am I educating and providing lifestyle changes that are sustainable, a huge portion of my sessions with my clients is almost a therapy session as much as it is a workout. Yes the diet changes, and structured workout programs based off your goals help, absolutely. But the Mental aspect is what I like to focus on and help my clients breakthrough. If you can get through my workouts you can get through anything.
And to me that has always been what sets me apart from others is the attention I give my clients not only to the workout but to the mental aspect as well. And that is what I am most proud of. I Still talk to young men I coached in sports or in life who tell me how much I helped them. And to see where they are at in life brings me the ultimate joy and feeling of success.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
To me the most success you will have, especially in my field of fitness, it is all amount being present. I have generated around 60% of my clients through my gym. We run a private facility that offers one on one training as well as memberships! When you are present at work and focused on giving your clients the service they deserve, that gets noticed. Everyone at the gym has the same common purpose and that is growth. when members see how diligent you are to your clients, that is your first chance and leaving a good impression. They see how you operate and become interested. However a successful business is linear. You are your product, and your business is a representation of you! Not only in person but even more so online. How you market yourself is a reflection of how successful you will be. Gaining clients is all about exposure! And lastly I’ve seen tremendous success in placing yourself in the environments you want to work in. If you want to service high end clientele, you then immerse yourself in the environments where you can access those individuals. Be charismatic and don’t be afraid to fail!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My business model is based off of authenticity. All of the content i produce isn’t meticulously curated where i look perfect at all times. The model of social media, just as every business is always changing. So you have to constantly be changing and adapting! However staying true to yourself and remaining authentic will propel you further and you will remain around longer in the business than the ones who create overly curated content. And that leads to the next step. You have to find and understand your target audience. What is your message and who are you trying to reach? You have to understand the demographic you are trying to serve and must create content dedicated to that demographic that is engaging and will keep your followings returning. You have to provide something tangible your followers can take and apply. Be of use! The ultimate goal is turning your followers into consumers.
