We were lucky to catch up with Tylee Personett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tylee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I really love this question, and in order for me to answer with integrity and humility toward my practice, I asked my community what advice, knowledge, and thoughts I may have shared, that helped them the most. The advice that has resonated the most with my clients was their worthiness of taking up space. “Do it for you” is something I say often in my yoga classes. Your feelings matter, and what you need matters – though so many of us, myself included, are still overly exerting ourselves for others. It can be so hard for us as parents, partners, co-workers, you-name-it, to slow down and check-in on ourselves. But ultimately, the slow down and rest, the social media detox and pause, the practice of letting go and trusting your higher power, are what fill the soul. You are worth the nourishment, attention, and care you give to everyone else in your life. I, personally, want to teach my kids how to take care of all parts of themselves. Whole body wellness is the priority. Your emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies need attention and care just as much as the physical body – embrace how your practice changes, and how you change with it.
Tylee, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m honored to connect with you! I’m Tylee and am forever dedicated to learning about the brain-body connection, and how we truly do have the power to heal ourselves. I became a personal trainer in 2014 and studied Holistic Health at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in 2018. Yoga, breathwork, and Ayurveda studies closely followed. I’m passionate about helping others and guiding them to heal themselves – I understand the path from the inside out. I am driven to guide others to Whole Body Wellness – ease in the mind, body and soul. When working with clients, we search for the root cause of the issue, the true feelings and emotions, and work to transform from the inside out. I am most proud to offer you a safe space to be seen, heard, and loved – I welcome you with an open heart.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Personally, my key piece to success is authenticity. As a spiritual healer, holistic health coach, yoga teacher, and most importantly a mom and a wife, being true to my heart and soul are number one, and I want to be a good example. It’s paramount to lead with an open heart and an awareness that everyone is on their own journey. I have deep compassion for humans. I have experienced my own series of rock bottoms from an early age in life and over time, and I’ve found great healing in what I teach and guide others through today. Ayurveda and yoga and holistic healing practices ultimately saved my life. I’m grateful to be here and the ability to share my experiences, in hopes it may reflect to another, that they are also worth showing up for.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think the deepest lesson I have had to unlearn, and continue to stay curious about, is the idea of worthiness. That I am worthy of being seen and heard as much as I guide my kids, my students, my clients to believe. From a very young age, I felt out of place and misunderstood. I didn’t feel truly acknowledged or felt. I didn’t really fit in anywhere, either, it seemed. I come from a mixed race family, for one, and a white, divorced, single-mom home. I have the darkest skin in my family, and I wasn’t always raised around people like me. We never talked about it, but I had a lot of questions. I was a competitive athlete with little time to make friends outside of gymnastics, so school felt very lonely for a long time.
It wasn’t until my twenties where I allowed myself to step away from who and what my surroundings were, and asked “Who am I?” or “Do I actually believe this, value this ____?” Whether it be the behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, environments – “Is this me?” Then be quiet and wait for the response. It can be intensely powerful work to slow down and witness your behaviors, emotions, feelings, and learned patterning. In my coaching practice, we work A LOT around self-awareness and reconnecting to your true authentic voice, as it is a lifelong journey worth exploring.
