We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tylar Lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tylar below.
Tylar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I can remember back as far as first grade telling my parents that I didn’t need to go to school because I was going to be an artist when I grew up. This came after finding out that I would be headed to summer school due to my poor grades. Drawing has always been a part of my life for as long as I have been able to hold a pencil. Throughout all of the changes in my life over the years making artwork has always been the one constant. I believe I found my calling really early in life and I have been pursuing that artistic path ever since.
Tylar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well for starters I go by the name tylardraws, I have been creating artwork for as long as I can remember with my most recent focus being larger scale murals. I like to think I can paint on just about anything but I would say that my greatest strength is canvas works. In addition to this I create everything from marker drawings to custom shoes and everything in between. The main thing that sets me apart from others is my style. It’s something I have been working tirelessly to develop but I believe I have gotten my style to a point where it is uniquely recognizable as my work. The thing I am most proud of is the fact that I have been disciplined enough to stick with my craft for all of these years. Even when no one was watching I was still working with the determination to develop my skills and create opportunities like this for myself. If there is one thing you should know about me is that I am always striving to get better and I take so much pride in my artwork. I want each artwork I create to be my best and I work meticulously to accomplish that. Hopefully when you see my paintings they bring you a sense of joy and spark creativity within you.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
For me personally the best resource I have is the people I know. If it wasn’t for putting myself out there and making connections I wouldn’t be where I am today. When trying to break into your cities art scene, it really is about knowing people. Regardless if you think your artwork is ready or not, don’t be afraid to test the waters, share your artwork with the world and the chances are someone will enjoy what you create. In my experience those people that support you early on will stick with you as your art grows and develops. Apply for group shows in your area, see if your city has an art center or resource/ opportunity website. Show up to art galleries/ shows and make those connections. Talking to people and being personably goes a long way for creating your opportunities. If you integrate yourself into your cities art scene it wont be long before you become a familiar face and make those connections you set out to find.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist isn’t the outcome, it is the process. All of those steps you take to get to get to the end result are what matters. With each step you’re building a strong foundation for your art and in turn, your life. The discipline you posess to see a project through is instilled in you. If you can find the pleasure in the process you will never rush to the end result. Only you will understand how much work went into creating that artwork and that’s what makes it valuable. Each piece you create is a testament to all of the practice, studying, energy and hours you put into the craft. At the end of it all you will have something that is complete, something that you can be proud of and something others will enjoy. That right there is the cherry on top.
