We were lucky to catch up with Tylan Corley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tylan , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I started when I was 7 years old during the pandemic because I had a lot of free time. This is when I had the idea of writing a book about being a big sister. When I was in the house with my little brother it was really challenging because we were in the house together all day due to Covid. When I had the idea of writing my book, I got some paper and started to make a little book of what the structure would be. When I was waiting for my book I was so excited and nervous because it was my first book ever that I wrote. The most difficult part was when I had to find a good illustrator! We went through three illustrators to find the right one because we had a certain look and way we wanted the pictures to look like.
Tylan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tylan Joy Corley, I was only 7 years old when I wrote my book but now I am 9 and in the fourth grade. I’m a Girl Scout and I just bridged from Brownie to Junior. I’m a volleyball player and I am really really good, I believe volleyball is my sport! I’m a Student Ambassador and I am on the Student Council, as well as in the Gifted program. I just recently got inducted into the National Junior Beta club at my school. I attend the International Academy of Smyrna and I love it. I didn’t just write a book but I also made pins and bookmarks that you can also purchase on my website. I love to sing and dance, but most of all I love spending time with my family! We always travel, try new restaurants and fun places.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal and mission is to inspire big sisters. Even when it may seem like it’s hard, keep going. Little brothers and sisters around the world look up to you as a role model as their older sibling. So always do your very best at all times!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Time when I had to pivot was doing my interviews for my many features I had in the past. I was so nervous, especially the live interviews because I had never done an interview before. But my parents prepped and encouraged me and after I got done with the interviews I was so proud of myself!
