We were lucky to catch up with Tykia Peterson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tykia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
I feel we expect friends and family to be the first to support our business.
We expect them to be there hand and foot when we put out a new product or new accessories pertaining to our business.
But that’s not always the case when creating new projects and content , realistically.
Family and friends love to support but you only have so much of them that it just seems like it’s not enough support.
The love and faithfulness will be there but when all is on your plate and your excitement is overflowing, your main support will come from the supporters around you which will always be the best outcome and remind yourself the “Why” of why you started your business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was thinking on a more widespread level. I was going through different stages in life of trying to figure out , what I love to do , what would bring me enjoyment and satisfaction to not only me but to future clients . I have locs and I always found the happiness of doing a style that I didn’t think I could do and pulling it off that I get so many compliments and “I LOVE YOUR HAIR! “ outburst from strangers that I have never seen before . So I said to myself , “Why are you not displaying your craft to others?” I have been doing my hair for 5 years and I wanted to implement that to my customers that I know I can turn their crown into a masterpiece as much as I get noticed because of my hair. I provide many consultations from what they don’t like the most about their hair to what issues they struggle with. Some maybe more sensitive about their hair not being able to grow as much or it’s not thick enough.. I had to learn and research what is the main reason why people hair growth was stunt. Sometimes the issues are deeper than I can reach but we all have to start somewhere to get an understanding of where we are going.
I have had many people ask me do I plan on doing starter locs and dye hair and I always advise them I’m in the process of learning to prefect my craft so when I do have that down pack. I am able to always have a “ yes “to the “I’m in the process of learning”. The name Mini Essential Oils came from my husband. He is very crafty with names and he calls me “Mini” which is because I’m a miniature version of him and since I’m also providing hair services and oils for the essential needs of people demands. He came up with the name and I grabbed it because it was mine and I ran with it . Lol !
Mini Essentials Oils provide hair growth oils , shampoo and conditioners , beard oils as well as men care which is made organic and natural. I also provide maintenance for my clients if they are needing a quick fixs or reattachments of a loc or as many as they need to make them love their hair before they leave out of my chair. I really think that set me apart of most brands and business. I want my clients to come back. I want them to know we will get it right no matter how long it takes. I care about your hair just as much as I care about mine. I want future clients to know the hair of your care is why I do what I do. I will research , I will provide information , I will make sure your needs are met when your in my chair. I want them to know Mini has your back.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I meet my business partner through an interview. He was interviewing me for a job and at the time it was just me , myself and my two boys. I was no where in the mindset of “ooooh he is HOT!!” I was in the mindset of let me upgrade myself to a better life for my boys and I. His coworker , which was female, was supposed to interview me and she asked him too. Long story short he sent me this long text message about how he wants to take me out on a date. By the things we had so much in common about I knew he was my husband. Til this day who would of known he would be a great teacher , friend , husband and business partner.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your business is always be ready to take the good with the bad. I feel when running a business you always have to be mindful of everyone’s liking and their opinions. Some clients like a fruity smell while that may not be your favorite scent , you like the more earth and dry smell. Some like a one or two drops while others like the whole bottle. Running a business is not for the weak. Learning a business can be for both because when learning the pros and cons you will always be ready for the criticism to push you to your full potential. I’m just now learning to be okay with someone not liking my business or products because what’s 1 to a billion people across the world?
