Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyesha Mack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tyesha, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is my self published poetry collection, Flowers That Water Themselves. It’s meaningful to me because it tells the story of what I thought was my full healing journey at the time. Now, I realize that writing it was only the beginning of my healing and that made the title all the more fitting. I have been able to reach to hearts and souls of others with my writing and inspired others to share their experiences with trauma and healing. That community that has been formed by this collection is a true representation of flowers watering themselves.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m at dancer and poet based in St. Louis, MO. I’ve been dancing since childhood and have been sharing freestyle Hip-Hop routines on my social media pages. I’m currently competing in a dance competition called, Ciara Presents: Dance Icon where dancers from all over compete to win prize money and a cameo in the R&B artist’s, Ciara, music video! Dancing has always been my passion and first love when it comes to creating and I am proud to be pursuing it more seriously than I ever have!
It am also a poet and spoken word performer. My stage name is Honey The Poet and I have hosted 9 open mics, featured in about 25 shows, and self published a poetry collection. Writing is something that has always come easily to me and makes me feel free. I was considered a “Closet Poet” until 2019 when I performed for the first time at a local open mic here in St. Louis called Lyrical Therapy. From that moment I was hooked on inspiring people with my words and using my vulnerability to heal, gain confidence and love myself.
Both creative paths shape who I am. They allow me to show up as my authentic self and by doing that I have been able to inspire many others and that is what I am the most grateful for. I always said if I am able to touch at least one heart with anything that I create then it’s all worth it because my main goal is to finally be heard and felt.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non-creatives always look at creatives, myself included, as if our goals and dreams are too far fetched and unattainable. Creatives are often told that what they want to do with their lives is “unrealistic”. Not realizing the freedom and love that fills up when creating and doing something that you absolutely love. Creativity for most of us is just as important as our next breath. We see the vision and we see others who have succeeded in the things we do and that inspires us to keep creating until we reach our dreams. To all my fellow creatives out there, please quiet the naysayers and keep going! As I always say, “It’s doesn’t matter who doesn’t, somebody’s gonna feel it.”
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes! When it comes to dancing, I would love to go on tour with big name artists as a backup dancer or choreographer. I truly hope my dance journey opens those doors for me. As far as poetry, I still dream of my poetry collection becoming a best selling book and I am able to travel the world performing my pieces for large audiences. I truly hope all of my hard work and dedication pays off one day!
