Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyanna Choyce. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tyanna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
It is actually crazy how everything worked out for me. I was in the process of becoming a life insurance agent and I needed to get some paperwork notarize. I used to work for a law firm as a legal case manager and I came across a lot of documents that needed a notary or was already notarized. I had two friends who notarized documents and I reached out to one of them to get my documents notarized so I could become a life insurance agent. While I watched the process on her notarizing my paperwork , I started asking questions like what’s the purpose of all of this, like what do notary publics actually do? How do they serve a purpose in the community? And as she broke it down to me, it all made sense. I worked for a law firm for four years on and off. I should have been a notary public along time ago. But that’s the thing I have many gifts. So later that night after I got my documents notarized, I put my life insurance agent stuff to the side and started digging and doing more research on becoming a notary public. I really enjoyed what I saw and how easy the process was to begin. So I started doing all the paper work, went to school for a day and passed the exam the first time and went down to be sworn in, in the matter of 7 days after getting my paperwork done I became a notary public for the state of Georgia. At the time my goal was to get back into criminal law and working for the courts, but I just knew it was not something wanted to do with my future. So, in order to carry the form of law with me. I became a Notary Public working for US Virtual notary, because working with the law will always be in the form of my heart.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a workaholic and a hustler. I contribute many gifts and creativity to my life. I have had many businesses that I’ve started but three of them stuck with me the most. Becoming a loan signing agent, a public notary and a life insurance agent. I got into the notary public industry because I saw a lot of people in my family and community who needed documents notarized including myself. It was the same with life insurance. Individuals were passing away around me and I saw how hard it was for families to pay for services, funerals, and/or debt from the person who passed. So I decided to get into the business and learn what it meant to be a life insurance agent. I do think its very important that everyone gets life insurance that way you could build family wealth, cover potential devastating financial losses that can result if something happened to you and help pay off debts, living expenses, and pay medical or final expenses.
As a notary public and a loan signing agent I can help solve a state government to help deter fraud.. As a Notary public I witness the signing of important documents and verify the identity of the signer(s), their willingness to sign the documents, and their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction. People like us are important because we ensure proper execution and to deter fraud. You might have heard of cases where one party denied signing a document during a transaction to the other party’s detriment. Notarizing prevents these kinds of disputes. As a life insurance agent, I have the important job of helping people prepare for unexpected circumstances. The main tasks of a life insurance agent are to: 1) sell life insurance policies and annuities to clients; and 2) to work with clients and beneficiaries to process insurance claims promptly.
As a notary public I am proud of Being able to help my community and I have had the opportunity to be a public servant appointed to witness the signing of important documents and administer oaths to help combat fraud….It is exciting to note that ‘A notarial appointment is a privilege, not a right. I am Proud to travel to different homes and offices to meet with people of various backgrounds, careers, cultures, and personalities. It is quite the adventure getting to know each individual, and it is an honor to be a small but vital part of those major decisions that need to be made at one point or another in life. I realize that those I serve may be somewhat hesitant about something as large as purchasing a new home or perhaps signing a power of attorney for a loved one to care for them. I feel very proud to be a part of that moment in their life and to offer my assistance with a smile and a warm, understanding attitude, which can make all the difference in the world. As a life insurance agent I am proud helping people, and working in this field gives me the opportunity to do that in many ways. Helping clients in some of the most difficult times in their lives, dealing with tragedies, loss of homes, or automobiles is the hardest thing to see, but is the most rewarding part of my job. Working in the insurance field is definitely challenging and at times demanding, but you feel needed. What I have discovered over the past year that I have dedicated to the insurance industry is that it is a never-ending learning experience, there’s always something more to learn. There is always constant change, and you just have to be ready to adapt to it. There’s never a dull moment, and I don’t always go to work knowing what will happen but, whatever happens I’m always prepared for it. My job is beyond interesting, and I am very passionate about what I do.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Power to the pivot! I’ve had a few professional pivots in my life that I mentioned earlier. Making a career-to-calling pivot can always change your life for the better. While being in my master’s program I hung around a lot of entrepreneurs my dad is one, my grandmothers, even a couple of my cousins are. One day I sat to myself and thought I need to do something and start my own business. Something that will stick with me and help others in their life. I went from selling vegetarian food plates at Lake Merritt in Oakland, ca, to selling peach cobblers, and t2O trap water, to doing virtual workouts on Instagram during covid, to moving to Georgia to becoming a notary public, loan signing agent and a life insurance agent. We face so many obstacles that we go through in life and us as individuals have many gits to offer. It’s the ones we go after the most. Moving to a different state provided many changes to my life. And moving to Georgia, which is one of the top entrepreneur states, I had to work hard and get my hustle on and I cant wait for me to see my progress in the next 5 years. And we always have to remember through the pivot process when we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back in time, it means I would be the same person I was x amount of years. Which means I would know just as much as I knew all these years ago. I would know nothing more. I would have the same mindset the same awareness, and the same limiting beliefs. Thus, I would do the same thing. Why wouldn’t I? I wanted the best for myself all these years ago. I mean, just think about it! Did I want to screw up (provided that today I believe I screwed up in the past)? Was it my intention to screw up, or was my intention just the opposite?
We all want to do only the things which will help us get to where we want to be or get us what we want. That’s always the basis for our decisions. We don’t sabotage ourselves. Sure, we make choices and/or decisions which later prove to be unfortunate. But at the time when we were making them did, we know that this choice will be unfortunate? Of course not! Did we choose an option which wasn’t best for us, knowing that we’re making a mistake? Of course, we didn’t know we’re making a “mistake”. If we knew it was a mistake (that this choice will be unfortunate) would we have chosen it? In a nutshell We always push our interests. Even if we look at our past and judge ourselves harshly, we still can be sure we did what we believed was the best option for us, or we made certain moves without analyzing them (in the heat of the moment), because that’s part of who we are (emotional creatures). And in the heat of the moment (when we don’t have time to think) we either care about getting pleasure (we want to feel good), or self-preservation (we want to defend ourselves or our close ones). So if I was to go back, I would still choose the same route and the same profession I am already in.
