We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyflyy Weeks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ty below.
Alright, Tyflyy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my opinion, I believe in order to become successful in any industry, you have to remain consistent. No matter what curve balls are thrown at you while you build, you must push through. I started my career on faith with nothing but a dream to be one of the best hairstylists of my generation. A lot of obstacle could’ve stopped me from pursuing my dreams but I remained focus on the end goal that I’ve set for myself. Being consistent, hungry for the success, and most of all having faith are important factors to becoming successful.

Ty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ty and I am from Birmingham, AL. I am a hairstylist that specializes in healthy natural hair, all hair extensions services, and protective styles as well. I believed you can wear any hair style as long you give love to your natural hair. I work with clients who suffer from loss, scalp issues, color damaged hair, etc. I love to create a vibe with my clients. I believe that sets me apart from some hairstylists. I want to my chair to be safe space for them be comfortable.
I’ve been living in Atlanta, GA for 9 years now. I moved here to pursue my dream of being a successful hairstylist. I’ve always knew I had the talent to do hair but I lacked the passion for it. Mainly because but I was unsure about what part of that industry I wanted to involve in. Most people with dreams of being a hairstylist want a salon for their end goal and they are content with just that. For me, it was different. I always said if I pursued this dream, I would have to it different than what I’ve seen growing up.
After my father passed in 2011, everything changed for me. I thought I knew everything about life and forced myself to grow up quick. I went through hard times of being homeless, jobless, and losing important people in my life I’m so many ways. One thing I did realize, is when you’re down to a point where you feel like there is no up, your faith will come in to change that. My attitude about how I was living my life changed and I started focusing on my future.
I built a steady clientele in Birmingham by passing out flyers and doing dirt cheap hair specials. Lol Whatever to get people to sit in my chair one time because I knew that’s all I needed. I had confidence that they would come back.
Then I moved to Atlanta to do more. I met a friend who helped me build my career by becoming my first brand ambassador. After that, everything started falling in line. Now I can proudly say I’ve survived being a self employed hairstylist. I have a steady clientele in Atlanta all because I didn’t give up whenever times got hard. Pushing through the weeks of no bookings and just promoting no matter what. I had faith that everything would turn itself around.
I am very proud of where I am now in my career compared to where I started. If someone asked me did I see myself achieving what I have so far, I would definitely tell them not all. That’s why faith is important. Although I’m not quite near my end goal, I can definitely say I heading in the right direction.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective way to build clientele is to market your business through social media, networking, etc! Put it in anyones face who will listen is what I tell myself. Social media is an excellent tool to get your business out to people in ways you could never imagine.
When I first started out trying to build clients in Birmingham, social media played a very small part in it because it wasn’t what it is today. I had to go pass out flyer, do weekly specials, and get people to talking about my work. If you’re not consistent with marketing your business, how will people know about you.
Brand yourself, get people to talking about your business. Go out to networking events to meet like minded people. You never know who may be an asset to your business growing.
Question not found
When I first decided to brand myself I turned to Facebook and Instagram. I would tag hair companies that my clients used hoping they would repost my work. On Facebook I would make a post and tag as many people it would allow me to. I just wanted people to see my work. The use of Facebook hair groups and Instagram hashtags got a lot in motion for me. After that I went on a search for a brand ambassador with a big following. That’s when I met Ashlee Monroe and we became a really good friend. I would do different looks on her and she would post on Instagram which lead to people following me and inquiring about my services. That’s when I got to thinking. I knew then I needed at-least 3 more if I wanted to really build the clientele I was looking for. So I started working with Ms Jackyoh, Julia Badji, and Elisa Saraii to create amazing content for people to see.
The best advice I can give some who wants to build their social media presence, is to POST! Post everyday and use hashtags. Tag people in post you make so that you can reach bigger audiences. Tag brands when using their products so that their platform can be used to help build yours.
