Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lowtyde. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lowtyde, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My debut project “The Summer Slump” has probably been the most meaningful project of mine. I spent a good part of 7 months putting this project together, dating back to August 2021.
The backstory: I had a couple demos of tracks that I started back in Summer 2021, and I was on a roll in terms of creating fresh ideas, and making beats. I wasn’t even thinking about releasing a project with these songs back then. I just kept challenging myself to be consistent and to try to make the best music possible.
August (2021) came around and that’s when I started my new job. I was inspired by my personal growth and leaving my old toxic workplace, so I was in an amazing place mentally. I remember writing “Thank U (Say the Word)” during one of my first weeks at this new job.
During September I wrote “Agent Zero” and “Carolina Ave” (originally titled Sept 13th Freestyle) and I think that’s when I knew I wanted to put these songs together to make a project.
I went into the projects creation with the simple objective of having fun. I didn’t wanna take myself too serious and I wanted to make some tunes that people can jam out to. I also wanted people to give a glimpse of what I’m capable of, both lyrically, and production wise!
This project is super meaningful to me because it’s my first official LP! I talk about a lot on this project. I talk about my origin story, why I make music the way I do, etc. and I must say, it’s the most ME body of work I’ve ever put out. I even put myself on the cover haha!
This project will always have a special place in my heart.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So my name is Ty! I go by my artist name Lowtyde and I’m a rapper, producer, audio engineer in the making, video editor, and anything necessary to be self sufficient in 2022!
I’ve been recording and releasing music for the last 5 years, and I’ve been writing raps and poems since I was like 9 or 10. I discovered I had a passion for writing back in Elementary School because my teachers loved my short stories and poems. I always feel like I’ve had a unique voice when it comes to writing and I’ve always been able to articulate my inner thoughts and creativity within my writing!
I discovered I was passionate for music at around the same time, and I remember all the soul music that my mom and grandma would play all the time. Anything from the Isley Brothers, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill, they played it all.
I think I tried out producing one summer when I went to Tallahassee to visit my cousins. This might’ve been the summer going into 6th grade or even earlier. I had Mixcraft… version like 5 or 6, and I used to be on there cooking up and rapping over those beats in addition to my cousins rapping on them as well.
I also used to sing in the choir at church (as mentioned on Carolina Ave) and that was my first taste of performing.
Fast forward to today, and I used my foundation to fuel my creativity and to push me to be the best version of my self that I could be.
With my music, my main goal is to spread love and to inspire, and to give people songs to live their everyday lives to. I put love into everything I do, and my goal is to have that radiate through my music, through interviews, through music videos, etc. I feel like humans need art in order to digest reality. Music is often the sign of the times, and a direct reflection of what it means to be alive in this era. I realize how important it is to always be a student and to find different ways to fall in love with your craft. With music I feel like there is no ceiling, because there’s always something to learn, you’re always going to be living life (so you’ll have things to talk about), and there’s always no ideas to explore. Also, another thing that’s important to me is collaboration. You haaaaave to work with your peers because there’s soooo much you can learn from each other, it’s a beautiful exchange. Music can bring people together like nothing else in this world. It’s a universal language that we all speak.
Lowtyde is for the people! “Everything I do is ’cause I love this sh*t!” (Agent Zero) and that’ll remain true.
My brand is being my most authentic self and trying to spread positivity because the world needs it!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I love this question because the answer is super simple and I think it’s an important topic overall . I think artist support starts at the local level! There are tons of talented folks out there that deserve recognition! It can be as simple as a repost, a story share, a retweet, word-of-mouth, etc. Any kind of exposure can go a looooong way for an artist/creative, and if everybody’s doing it it builds a network/community, which increases the strength of the movement 10 fold.
Community is SO important because you can link up with like minded individuals and collaborate and exchange ideas. There’s a beautiful community blossoming in South Florida right now, and I know one day we’ll make our mark on the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly, it’s when people can resonate with your work and they can relate to something I talk about in my songs. It’s the ultimate give back. I love when people can tell me what they liked about my work, or what they don’t like. Feedback is everything!
It’s beautiful to see the hard work that goes into making music pay off! A lot of people really don’t know how much goes into the process of making music. I damn near had 20 different mixes for each song on this project!
It was well worth it because people have been enjoying the project!
