Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ty Salvant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ty, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
For years, I observed how schools organized private events at our local amusement park, and I wanted to create a similar experience for our homeschooling community. I met with the former CEO of our park system about how they could be more homeschool-friendly. From this discussion, I learned the requirements to host a night at the park, and with determination, we successfully organized our first event. Though it was a challenging endeavor, it was still a success, and we continued to replicate the event three more times, improving our processes each time.
Emboldened by these experiences, I wondered about the potential of hosting an adult-only night at the amusement park with a philanthropic twist. The idea was to create an event where adults could have fun while meeting and learning about local nonprofit organizations. This concept was a significant risk, as it diverged from the traditional family-oriented events we had organized in the past.
I assembled a dedicated committee and took the plunge, organizing the first “Time to Play” event. Despite thorough planning, things didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. However, I used the lessons learned to make substantial improvements for the following year.
This year, I doubled down on my efforts. I reached out to a broader range of organizations, nearly doubling the number of participating nonprofits. We expanded our outreach to various groups to attract a diverse audience. We connected with businesses that promote volunteerism, offering discounted tickets for their employees to discover new organizations to support.
Through these efforts, we aimed to create a unique and meaningful event that combined fun and philanthropy, allowing adults to engage with their community in a novel way. Everything that I thought would happen did: adults had fun and shared how much they needed that night, people were amazed by the variety of organizations and services they provided, and nonprofits gained new volunteers, supporters, clients, and potential board members.
I already have ideas on how to make it even better next year. Taking this risk has been a journey of learning and growth, and I am excited about the continued potential of “Time to Play.”
Testimonials from attendees and participating organizations

“This is a great opportunity for folks to learn about many nonprofits in our community, the great work these organizations are doing, and find out how they can get involved!” Allison D

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello! I’m Ty Salvant, a passionate mom of six, a prolific writer, a steadfast advocate, and a trusted advisor. My personal and professional experiences have enriched my journey, which I now channel into my work with “Time with Ty.” I’m deeply committed to championing causes for women, children, families, and the broader community. Whether it’s through hosting events, facilitating book clubs, or offering guidance on self-care and personal development, my mission is to uplift and empower those around me.
My personal experiences and deep-seated passion for helping others drove my journey into this field. For years, I served as a resource for friends and family, offering advice and support on topics ranging from homeschooling and parenting to marriage and self-care. Recognizing the broader need for these resources, I formalized my efforts, creating “Time with Ty” to share my insights, experiences, and support with a wider audience. My involvement with community projects and associations such as the Junior League of New Orleans, Catholic Engaged Encounter, and Nola Homeschoolers further honed my skills and solidified my commitment to this work.
At “Time with Ty,” we offer various services and creative works designed to enhance the lives of women, families, and communities. These include:
– Events: We host events like “Time to Play Non-Profit Night,” where we bring together adults and nonprofit organizations for an evening of playing with a purpose. People discover an organization to volunteer with, support financially, or receive services they didn’t know they needed. Nonprofits meet potential board members, donors, or volunteers in a setting that encourages everyone to have fun!
– Workshops with Guides:
Time for Us: A 75-Day Marriage Challenge encourages couples to invest 75 days in replacing bad habits with healthy ones to strengthen their relationships. The challenge begins and ends with an assessment, incorporates daily dialogue, and allows couples to identify three personal relationship goals. It can be done alone but is more effective in small groups to help create a community and provide accountability.
The ABCs of Self-Care workshop introduces participants to a holistic approach to enhancing well-being. Individuals learn to recognize emotions and understand the pivotal role of self-care, set clear limits, practice assertiveness, and foster healthy relationships. Each letter has a book recommendation and suggestions on addressing areas incrementally.
– Book Club: The monthly book club allows the community to discuss books that enhance and broaden their personal lives.
– Public Speaking: Sharing insights and motivational talks on various topics related to personal development, homeschooling, and community engagement.
– Books:

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
As a lifelong learner, I enjoy exploring books, videos, and presentations that offer valuable insights into working smarter and enhancing the tools I can share with others. Some resources have significantly impacted my management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy.
One book that profoundly influenced me is “The 16 Undeniable Laws of Communication” by John Maxwell. I took copious notes while reading it, more than any other book recently. Here are a couple of key takeaways that I often share when recommending it to others:
(1) Create a Library of Quotes: Maxwell emphasizes the importance of having a repository of quotes you can draw from when needed. This practice enriches your communication and prepares you for any speaking or writing opportunity.
(2) Collaboration Elevates Ideas: Another crucial point is that collaboration can transform a good idea into a great one. Engaging with others and sharing your thoughts can lead to innovative solutions and enhanced outcomes.
Our local National Speakers Association (NSA) chapter invited Stand Tall Steve to kick off our presentations this year. He was, by far, the best speaker I’ve seen at our meetings. He offered a step-by-step guide to his business strategy, which was incredibly enlightening. There are two takeaways I often share about his method for content creation.
(1) Leverage Your Strengths: Steve encouraged us to work in our strengths with detailed steps on how he manages content creation, supports small businesses, and builds his business. It was a deep dive behind the scenes.
(2) Gradual Implementation: Steve also shared that this approach didn’t come overnight. He gradually added these components over the past several years. This incremental approach inspired me to work towards a similar strategy, enhancing my efficiency and output. Slow and steady is less stressful than warp speed.
Around the same time, I read “Less Doing, More Living” by Ari Meisel, which further reinforced the importance of efficiency and automation. Meisel challenges readers to automate as much of their lives as possible, from grocery shopping to routine tasks, to free up time for more meaningful activities. This book has been instrumental in helping me identify areas where I can implement automation to improve my productivity and work-life balance.
These resources have collectively shaped my approach to management and entrepreneurship. By incorporating lessons from John Maxwell, Stand Tall Steve, and Ari Meisel, I’ve learned the value of preparation, collaboration, leveraging strengths, and automation. These principles have enhanced my efficiency and provided me with valuable tools to share with others. As I continue my journey, I remain committed to exploring new resources and ideas to refine my approach to work and life.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When we think of resilience, we often focus on professional efforts. Resilience in my personal life led to professional development.
When I was 30, my mom said, “I thought you would’ve written a book by now.” I didn’t know why she thought that—I had never expressed any interest in writing. But her words planted a seed that would grow over time.
Years of witnessing women feeling disappointed on Mother’s Day because they were an afterthought or felt invisible deeply affected me. This sentiment percolated in my mind for a long time. Then, a few years ago, something shifted. On Mother’s Day, my children greeted me with handmade cards expressing things they loved about me. While a card from a 5-year-old is endearing, one from a 14-year-old felt like a lackluster effort. Initially, I was disappointed but planned to accept their offer. However, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that I deserved more.
Instead, I decided to take action. I sat my children down and explained that I devoted so much to them and deserved more than an afterthought. I created a list of 10 things I would appreciate receiving from them and left to give them time to complete it. I treated myself to lunch, shopping, and dessert and sat by the lakefront to reflect on my journey of motherhood.
As I reflected, I asked myself:
What memories did I want my children to have of our time together?
What did my kids need to know before they left my house?
Was I the mother I wanted to be? If not, why not?
Did they see me outside of my role?
When I returned home, 70% of my list was done, and we were all happy. Since then, I have made it a tradition to create a list and give my children time to complete it on the Saturday before Mother’s Day.
Acknowledging and Addressing Discontent: When I felt underappreciated, I took proactive steps to communicate my feelings and needs to my children. This required courage and a willingness to assert my worth.
Reflection and Growth: Reflecting on my motherhood journey was a form of self-care and personal growth. It allowed me to align my actions with my values and aspirations.
Creating and Maintaining Traditions: Establishing a new Mother’s Day tradition demonstrated my ability to turn a challenging situation into a positive, ongoing practice that benefits both me and my children.
Embracing New Challenges: Inspired by my mother’s words, I ventured into writing, a field I had not considered before. This shows my ability to embrace new challenges and grow from them.
Overall, my resilience is reflected in my ability to transform disappointment into growth, establish meaningful traditions, and pursue new goals inspired by the seeds planted by those around me. That all led to a mission of redefining motherhood to include self-care and self-compassion so we raise boys with realistic expectations of future partners and daughters not afraid of motherhood.
