Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ty Jack. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ty, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
The best thing my parents did for me, was invest in my wildest dream, entrepreneurship! I knew when I started, working a 9 to 5 wasn’t for me. They invested in my schooling, salon and in my dreams. My mom wasn’t one to abandon me when I turned 18. She was there for me then and she’s one of my biggest supporters now. Without her, my dad and stepdad behind me, I don’t think I would be as established as I am, with my business and emotionally.

Ty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started off my art journey, officially, in 7th grade. I always loved creating things, but I had no idea at the time how good I was at it and how happy it made me. I knew then that I wanted this to be apart of me forever. I continued this throughout high school and college. while I was working on obtaining my art degree, I started dabbling in social media. This is when Instagram became a thing. At this time, I started playing in makeup and mimicking looks from my favorite horror movie. By the time I had graduated, I had established a social media platform and presence. At this time I had to decide my next move and what I could possibly do with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts. That’s when I decided to take it a step further and enroll in cosmetology school. I didn’t have any experience with hair, other than doing my own, but I knew I had a newly developed passion for makeup and art was my life. This was my moment to flourish, and I did just that! I finished the program two months early, passed my boards on the first try and now I’m a certified cosmetologist and artist! But again came the question, “what next?” I tried working a regular job and I tried working in salons, but that wasn’t for me. That’s when my mom suggested opening my own business. I was both excited and afraid, but this was my moment to either sink or swim. And omg did I swim! This October, on the 9th, will be my 5th year anniversary and I couldn’t be more proud of me and my business. There’s been so many trials, but I’ve made it through every one. And as you know, there are plenty of artists and cosmetologists in the world, but they aren’t as magical as me. In my salon, I’ve created a space for my clients to not only be at peace, but I’ve provided a top of the line experience from the time you walk in until the time they leave, and it’s so amazing. I want to leave a legacy behind my name and I feel as though I’ve done just that.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’ve had to unlearn being a black hairstylist is there a being a such thing as “good and bad hair.” In most cases, we are taught that a more loose texture is good and more coarse hair is bad. Within the past 4yrs, I’ve worked with every texture you could imagine and they’re all beautiful in their own way. No hair is better than the next and they’re all beautiful in my place of business.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my social media has been a beautiful experience! I love it because it allows me to be more social and vocal than I am in person. I made my Facebook as soon as I graduated from high school, going into college. Instead of adding local people from school, I started adding people with similar interests and the same niche. From that point, we pretty much grew up together! My Facebook friends are some of the best people I know and my biggest and best support system. My advice to people trying to build a platform, make a connect in every place you step foot. Whether it’s a small gathering or a huge party, find someone who looks like you or you see that shares a similar interest with you. Before you know it, you’ll have a whole team behind you!
