Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ty Cobb . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ty , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
The best boss I’ve ever had was my forever shero Toni Ready she was my cosmetics department manager at Saks Fifth Avenue when I worked for Giorgio Armani Cosmetics. She called me into her office and asked me when was I going to put in my two weeks. You can imagine I was shocked and confused, then she followed with her reasons. She said Ty, your gift, personality, and just the overall person you are doesn’t belong between four walls. You are different and the world needs to experience Ty Cobb. I cried that knowing I have fit at jobs. She said you talk so much about faith so believe in what you speak about so much. Yes, she hit me with my own beliefs and words in order, for me to know my worth. She told me when you write your first book I want the first copy. That conversation still gives me chills until this day. When I wrote my first book “Beat University”, a fictional account of a beauty school. I sent an autographed copy to her along with some Ty Cobb Beauty Cosmetics.
She’s such an amazing and beautiful person and I’m forever indebted to her for empowering me.
Thank you, Toni!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I get asked a lot about how I got started and my answer is always “God” I know that may sound cliche but it’s the truth. Growing up in a church household my gift for music and now being in Artist Development started from the tender age of 5 years old watching my grandfather rehearse with his Gospel quartet group. As a child attending Gibbs Elementary, I was a part of the gifted and talented program because of my big personality, tenacity, and talents. I have always participated in drama, choir, art, and fashion programs that contribute to who I am today.
My mom would tell you that I used to model around the house in heels, tearing up shirts making outfits, and doing hair and makeup lol, my aunt Debbie used to call me little miss Diana Ross… I was something else I tell ya. So yet again, God’s hand has always been on me from birth, and I’m grateful for always having “A-LARGE” personality that seems to always draw a crowd of people and is healing to the soul. He has breathed on me with something so special in the form of creativity.
At the age of 15, my first love was hair-styling, many people don’t know I can throw down doing some good ole hair. My cousin Pam if you asked her now would tell you, “Ty go to the bathroom and come out with a different style after I finished her hair.” And shortly thereafter my lasting love of makeup artistry followed because of my love for drawing. I am a self-taught who went on to teach and inspire a lot of the DMV areas Makeup Artistry community.
God has equipped me with gifts that come easy because of him. I’ve never been one to just pick up any talent because someone else is doing it. Moving into clothing designing has always been natural since my 6th grade year of elementary school going into Junior High and High School. I would make all of the outfits for the modeling team and drama classes. Style and fashion is in my DNA.
Years later creating, produced, and stating in the first reality show for artists called “The Real Makeup Artists of DC” on TY COBB TV. YouTube was the perfect place to house my first production of writing and creating content. It’s been a journey of great opportunities and I can’t forget The Ty Cobb Show radio show 8 years strong on Ripped Radio Network. I have since birthed 2 clothing lines ALARJ and Randemish Clothing, Ty Cobb candles and Ty Cobb Beauty Comestics.
I give all honor and glory to God for giving me gifts that I didn’t have to sit in a classroom to process. I’m truly blessed and most of all. I’M PURPOSE DRIVEN. Obstacles will always come but always push through knowing it’s a part of the ladder to success!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes, I can. I remember when I first had the idea of creating and producing my reality show. I was told to ask a friend for their advice because they were in the industry. Though I love and respected this person, they told me to look for a larger production company and let them do it. I knew that God had given me a gift to produce, direct, and even star in it. Therefore, I decided not to wait and went on to produce my show myself with one cameraman. Yes, only one and people thought I had a team of 10 because of the way my show looks. Let’s just say the DMV, ATL, LA and beyond, were hosting watch parties for my show every Sunday at 8pm. I created the first show ever for Makeup artists. The moral of this the story is never go with what others think go with your heart, gut feeling, and of course God.
I produced two successful seasons and my trailer went viral. My resilience kept me from missing out or doing what I knew I was capable of doing.
Check out seasons one and two of “The Real Makeup Artists of DC” on Ty Cobb TV, on YouTube!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding is meeting new people that tell me that I inspire them and even the ones that will never tell me but I know.
I have always wanted to bring everyone along with me and see others win. . I can write a book on that lol, we’ll save that topic for another article. Just knowing that my work has helped and encouraged someone to go after their dreams makes my heart joyful.
The failure is in never trying!! -Ty Cobb
