We recently connected with Two Fifths and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
Brad had just moved to the League City area, I had lived in Clear Lake nearly all my life and played in bands around town. A local bar where my current band was playing introduced us to Brad in 2008. Brad was doing some solo acoustic stuff at the time and Joel (the bar owner) thought he would be a great addition to the band. Brad and I hit it off pretty quick and where fast friends, he ended up joining the band as our new singer. We were a 5 piece rock band and loved to play loud! During this time we tried to do a two piece acoustic act, around 2010, doing covers, but we never really got any traction despite trying. Fast forward to 2012, I was in the midst of opening a brewery and time was not on my side, so I had to quit the band and pretty much all gigging as well. Brad continued to play with several other incarnations of past members and did quite well keeping his name out in the public. By 2015 the brewery was established and I had more time to play. Brad and I had continued to play together at each others house just for personal entertainment. One night we were watching the news at his house and that’s when we had a eureka moment. Neither one of us wanted to play covers anymore, we knew that, but writing always seemed forced. Without instruments we sat in his kitchen and sketched out a song on a paper towel, then grabbed our guitars and played it, laughing the entire time. From there we started writing songs that made us laugh or think. Soon we decided that we wanted to play out in front of people so we could share our music. We started to hit some open mics and received a decent response so we kept writing.
Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Brad and Mike both started early in the music scene. Brad cut his teeth in St Louis, Missouri (late 1980’s) and Mike started around 7th grade (1984) in the Houston area. While Brad was mostly a singer song writer, Mike was a lead guitar player and arranger for a punk/metal outfit. Both played original music from the start, but eventually in adulthood discovered that playing covers makes more money. Meeting in 2008 and eventually joining up in a cover band the two decided to strike out on their own and create music that would entertain and make people laugh, while still having serious and controversial lyrics. Our live shows are what we thrive on. We are a high energy band that strive to make you forget that we are an acoustic act. We focus a lot on rock type riffs and heavy on harmonizing our vocals. The production value of our stage setup is not something you see very often with a band this small and we use it to heighten the viewers experience. Foggers, large back drop with our logo and moving programable lights complete with a computer to run it all set a focal point for our fans and really help to transport them into our world.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We are still rather unknown by most and this is largely due to the fact that we will not play every show that comes our way. We have a lot of gear and production so to play a gig for us is a big deal and we want it to be special to everyone involved, from us to the fans to the club owner. By far the biggest thing that people respond to is our energy. We give everything we have the entire time we are on stage and many times leave nothing left. there have been multiple occasions when we have got off stage and either had to find a cooler to sit in or find a place to just collapse and catch our breath.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
That one person that comes up to you after a show and remembers the lyrics or mentions how much the lyrics made him smile or laugh. When people pay attention to the words that is the biggest form of flattery you can get as a musician.
