We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Twnkii Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Twnkii below.
Twnkii , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In the graffiti culture every day is a risk, weather your putting up some tags where society deems illegal or putting up artwork on a wall or as a mural exposed to the public for critique. Krewline was developed out of that idea as a small business and from that culture by my brother and I around 2017. We prototyped an aerosol adapter called Krewline 210 Cap, the graffiti community refers to as a stencil cap or adapter. The 210 Cap allows for Graff artists to spray very thin lines on their spray art. Ideally used for smaller walls and canvas pieces. We currently sell the caps online and wholesale to Graff shops in London, Berlin, USA cities, France, Mexico, and Netherlands.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Back story: We grew up in Ft Worth Texas, we are half Hispanic (Mexican). We grew up in the ’80s in a barrio where Lowrider culture was the life and that had an influence on us as artists from calligraphy, painting on lowrider bikes, spray painting, tagging, hip hop, and graphic design. Currently, we do have day jobs as graphic artists, motion graphics, and videography. We also do murals locally in San Antonio Texas. In the Graff world, there are a lot of monikers people go by or given to them unwillingly. My brother and I go by Twnkii and Twnky. We did not like that name growing up but it stuck, so we got used to it. We don’t like to use our real names for professional and artistic reasons. The Product: The 210 Cap by krewline, is an Aerosol adapter for graffiti artists. These are 3D printed in Resin and Nylon caps. This is a spray paint attachment that is a two-in-one tool that can spray thin lines & drip mop to go, without all the mess. This tool was designed with the mural, graffiti, and canvas artist in mind who is looking for that elusive fine aerosol detail in their wall and canvas pieces. You can now focus longer and harder on the artwork without the worry of dripping and splattering. The 210 cap sprays a constant 2mm to 6mm line aerosol in the color of your choice. Fits Ironlak, Montana (Spanish & German), Belton, Flame, Loop, Kolour, and similar types of aerosol cans and Rusto and Krylon.
There are always struggles along the way, that is what makes any achievement worthwhile. When we developed the 210 Cap prototype, it took longer than expected. We had to learn 3D programs, Product design, and product manufacturing along the way. The idea seemed simple but once you tried to apply it to an aerosol can the problems were apparent and grew. After 2 years of many iterations, and real case usage and feedback from artist around the world it started to come together so we started to manufacture the 210 cap in bulk numbers, usually 100 unit sets. Another part that was hard to gauge was marketing and setting retail and wholesale pricing. We still have bumps in the road but we are confident we have a viable product and most important that the Graffiti artists like using it. At this point what drives the success is our passion, encouragement, and connection to the graffiti communities around the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding parts of Krewline are the many Aerosol artist around the world that we come in contact with. How they use the 210 cap, what kind of art the create with it. The graffiti communities are truly a unique family around the world.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s are very interesting and complicated. Most people that don’t like them or think they are a scam don’t really understand how they work on a mathematical and encryption foundation. I do like them and how they support Artist through royalties and protecting creative rights on a blockchain. They help level the playing field between curators and the public as a whole. I don’t think they are going away, they are here to stay.
