We were lucky to catch up with Tweety and Patrice Angwenyi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tweety and Patrice, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
As former educators, Patrice and Tweety spent a lot of time making caffeinated decisions about transitioning to entrepreneurship. In doing so, on day on the way to work, Patrice started rolling with ideas about how coffee ultimately brings people together.
It unifies and inspires. It’s hustle fuel.
So jokingly, she said “hustle blendz” out loud during her commute. While in traffic, she called her husband to share with him her latest witty line and to her surprise he didn’t laugh. He just said “Let’s do it.”
After that, another revelation came to Patrice about the word “hustle”. She saw the acronym “help us see the light everywhere” which further ignited the mission to create this company.
HustleBlendz has started with coffee and ends with community and acceleration.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We both have education backgrounds specifically on the high school level. In addition to serving in ministry, coffee was just something we consumed and wanted to know more about it.
Building HustleBlendz from the consumer vantage point is what’s made our brand palatable and ultimately sets us apart. We’re faith based and choose to speak life and uplift our customers. We also know our customer’s needs: convenience.
So in our online presence, we offer subscription for retail clients and wholesale for B2B clients. We’re proud of our customer service and product.
In 2022, we decided to take another leap of faith and translate our online presence into our city’s very first cold brew bar. Specializing in a niche that many coffee shops save for warmer months was a risk in itself, but it’s something we were willing to stand on.
We encourage anyone to never compromise their brand to comfort the masses, Your people are your people.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You have to unlearn that the “downs” of business are directly related to your aptitude in life.
You have to unlearn those normalized distractions and brain breaks that get you off course.
You have to unlearn that some of the norms in your life are actually limitations and are killing your progress.
When we went full time in business, there was no plan b. We’re both educated and have the capability of getting a job if we need one. One of us could’ve stayed employed. There were so many strategies that we were well aware of, but chose faith. If anyone’s ever had to live and eat off of faith, you then understand the magnitude of unlearning.
There was (and often times still is) a high level of focus and retraining that has to take place for that perceived “inspiration” to take place.
Nobody sees the sacrifice, rejection, or moments of uncertainty. Unlearning has happened in so many strides of this journey and I doubt it’s going to end. We’re truly students to life and don’t mind it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
We built our audience by telling our story authentically. We’re a young married couple trying to figure out life, parenthood, and business while living for God. Many people see themselves when they see us. The relatability of our content is what drove traffic.
