We were lucky to catch up with Tuuh & Thales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tuuh & Thales, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning thr craft of making music is not easy. We both have similar experiences where we learn by taking chances and trying. I (Thales) personally wish I would’ve studied formally sometimes, because I do think it makes a huge difference having that theory background along with the experimental, and creative part of it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are from Brazil where japanese culture is insanely present, as we have the biggest japanese population in the world outside of Japan. So it is not uncommon to find bands playing japanese music there, which is where both of us come from, even being from different regions. We had our separate projects, Tuuh had a band called SUGOI and Thales a band called NORD EX, which originated the now called Nordex. We found a gap in the market of anime songs where everything seemed to be covered the exact same way the original was played, so we decided to give it a twist by being a duo that sings every song together, which gives us a LOT of possibilities. We also would record the same song in THREE languages, which was great for a while but turned out to be a hassle impossible to deal with. Now we are focused almost solely in recording our own original songs based on our favorite animes, or characters, which is also something you don’t see often. Thales is currently moving back to Brazil from Canada so the live concerts will become a reality again pretty soon.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Just creating. The world unfortunately is taking the wrong step towards speed, and shallowness due to algorithms and thinga like that, but art is not supposed to be done like that. It takes time, it takes dedication and we want to move away from that crazy social media agenda as much as we can.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
People always wonder how can “waste” time doing what we do. Think about it… Music is EVERYWHERE, so imagine any sort of content with no music. Everything is lifeless without it, films, cartoons, anime, ads, games, stores, even elevators need it. We are the ones who make that happen, so people should always remember that there are people who work to bring these media productions to life.
